A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Friday Feb. 7, a school wide Native Social Dance was held in the gymnasium of the St. Regis Mohawk School. There were three sections for various grade levels throughout the day. At 8:30, grade Kindergarten, Pre-Kindergarten and grade two enjoyed the songs and dances. From ten to eleven o’clock, grade three and four shared the fun and danced their moccasins off.
Bear Fox sang her new song, which is a musical Ohenton Karihwatehkwen. This song involved the children in singing the chorus part of the song.
A traditional lunch was prepared by the ladies of the Snye Recreation Committee.
Niawen to the committee for their awesome soup and fried bread.
At 1 o’clock, the social continued for grade 6, grade 5 and grade 1. There were also guests from Salmon River and they gave a Smoke Dance demonstration. Tina Square, Javan Jacobs, Dudes Thompson and Tekariwahkhen Herne came from SRC and Niawen to each of you. D.J. White also came over to show his Smoke steps as well.
More thanks go out to our singers, there wouldn’t be a social with their generous talents. John Thomas, one of Ahkwesahsne’s greatest artists, was on hand and shared the drum group. Niawen to the Ahkwesasne Big Bear Singers and to the Ratirennahawi Singers. Also to Shawn Chubb for helping out.
Also, Niawen to anyone who helped out in any way - the language teachers, Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Ross, Mrs. King, good job, Ms. Ransom for sharing your craftiness and make the gifts. To all the staff who were willing to rearrange their schedules and who supervised their students on our “Special Day”.
