Salmon River Girls Varsity Hockey N.Y. State Champions

New York State High School Hockey Champions 5th consecutive NYS championship with a perfect record this year of 22-0-0

The Salmon River girls had a nice payday for a seasons worth of hard work under first year coach Jim Barnes. The Salmon girls traveled to Oswego, N.Y. for the Final Four and met their nemesis, the Oswego Buccaneers, in the Semi-final Round on Saturday night. While Oswego played on home turf in front of family and friends, Salmon held nothing back handing the Bucs a devastating and embarrassing loss of 7-1 in front of the hometown crowd. Salmon lit the lamp early in the first period only to have it struck down because of a player in the crease. Shortly afterwards, on a power play, Salmon’s Alley Bero received the puck from Sky Timmons and shoots top shelf to beat the Oswego goalie for the fist goal of the game. Minutes later, Oswego answered with a tying goal. With about 5 minutes left in the period, Sky Timmons scored her first goal of the game as she poked in a rebound. Before the period ended, Alley Bero scored again on the power play assisted by Krista Oakes.

In the 2nd period of play, Toni Garrow scored assisted by Bero. Towards the end of the period, Sky Timmons would score her 2nd goal of the game on a breakaway as she deked to her backhand and slid the puck in the open net.

In the third period Savannah Francis scored as her shot passed over the goalie’s glove. To finish off a hat trick Bero scored again to seal a commanding 7-1 lead.

In the championship game on Sunday, the Shamrocks faced Potsdam, as Potsdam defeated Canton the night before by a score of 4-3 in double overtime and a shootout. Before the game started, awards were given out on the ice surface. They awarded Rosemarie Lauzon, Jen Tremblay, Ally Smiddy, Olivia Cook and Katie Bero to the All-Academic Team as students who received on 88 or better during the season. They also had the Honorable Mention Team awards to Brittany Avery and Katie Bero, 2nd Team All League awards to Tameka Thompson and Krista Oakes while Olivia Cook and Alley Bero got 1st Team All League. Alley Bero also received the League MVP award.

During the Championship game, after 2 tough checking periods, the score remained 0-0. Both teams definately had their chances to score. With just under 7 minutes to go in the game, Alley Bero scored the game winning goal that ended any hopes for Potsdam. But the Shamrocks had to hold Potsdam off the board for 6 more minutes and they did just that.

After the game, the All-Tournament award went to Sky Timmons, Olivia Cook and Alley Bero. All-Tournament MVP was awarded to Alley Bero.

Congratulations to coaches Barnes, Reyome and all the NYS champions!
