A Voice from the Eastern Door

Babies can have massages too!

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Healthy Babies program hosts events and workshops regularly in the community to give parents something extra to learn about. One of their most popular events is an infant massage class.

Sherry Laponsee, a registered massage therapist from the Hands on Health Massage Therapy Centre in Cornwall, teaches the one-hour course.

Sarah Peters of the Healthy Babies program said they try to hold the workshop four times a year. Infant massage is known to be beneficial to babies, she said.

“It helps with digestion and growth,” she said. “Especially with preemies, that skin-to-skin contact really helps.”

Laponsee does a thorough overview of the baby’s body and instructs parents on techniques to use, direction to move your hands and fingers in, and what types of massages are beneficial for special situations.

Contact the Healthy Babies office to find out when the next infant massage class will be held.
