A Voice from the Eastern Door

Beware of scam artists!

St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Detective Sgt. Matthew Rourke visited the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Center to warn local seniors about the works of a scam artist. He discussed the safety precautions to take if and when individuals feel uncertain with any person(s) or telemarketer who is trying to acquire personal information.

Some of the local seniors discussed their concerns and Rourke was more than happy to inform them of what to do in a variety of situations.

Some of the precautions one could take include:

- Asking any door-to-door sales person for their vendor’s permit.

- Watch for double swipes on your ATM card because your information can be recorded on a separate system.

- Keep a close eye on your bank account regularly.

- Watch out for credit card sign ups at events and fairs; Don’t be tempted by free merchandise.

The presentation was short and sweet, but provided the local seniors a sense of relief. There were a few chuckles shared within the room, but this subject is no laughing matter.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call the New York State Police at: (315) 769-7055.
