Salmon River Lady Shamrocks honor Seniors

Tuesday night the Salmon River Lady Shamrocks faced off against the Saranac Lake Red Storm at the Tom Cavanaugh Arena.

It was a tough battle for both teams but finally Alley Bero put Salmon on the scoreboard midway through the first period. Saranac opened their scoring in the second period to tie it up 1-1 only to be answered shortly by Katie Bero, ending the period 2-1.

Third period showed to be Salmons dominating period ending the game 5-1 with 3 quick goals, one for Alley Bero and 2 to Sky Timmons, who netted both her goals in the same shift. This was the final regular season game for Salmon, who finished up with an overall undefeated season of 17-0-0. They will begin the first round of play-offs on Monday, February 4th, squaring off against Saranac Lake again at 6:00pm.

Tuesday evening also served as Senior Night for Salmon’s graduating players. The departing players include #11 defenseman Okiokwinon Francis, daughter of John and Carolyn Francis. She has been a part of the team for the last 4 years, winning 3 State Championships and serving as a captain this year. She has proved to be a leader on and off the ice. Okiokwinon also plays volleyball and is a high honor roll student.

Salmon also loses #12 forward Rori Francis-Herne, daughter of Jay and Melissa Herne. She is an aggressive player who has contributed to the team on forward and defense. Rori has been a part of the team for the past 3 years, winning 2 State Championships. She plans on attending Syracuse University in the fall.

#4 Allison Smiddy has been a part of the Lady Shamrocks for the past 3 years, winning 2 State titles as well. She has proved to be one of Salmon’s most improved players. Ally is the daughter of Shelly and Gordy Smiddy. She plans to attend the University of Buffalo in the fall to study pre-med.

Tameka Thompson #35 has been the starting goalie for Salmon for the past 2 of her 3 years on the team. She anchored the team this year with 6 shut-outs and a 93% save average. She is the daughter of Anna and Eli Thompson. Tameka plans on attending Cortland State in the fall.

Salmon also loses #18 Katie Bero and #9 Alley Bero, twin daughters of Becky and Dwight Bero. They have been a part of the team for the last 4 years, winning 3 State titles. Katie has served as a captain for the last 2 years and has contributed to the team on forward and defense this year. She is an NHS member with high honors and plans on attending the University of Vermont in the fall.

Alley has served as a captain for all of her 4 years and currently leads the league in points in both boys and girls, 39 goals and 16 assists. She is a very unselfish and smooth player. In the fall Alley will be attending St. Lawrence University on a full athletic scholarship.
