A Voice from the Eastern Door

A salute to volunteers

On Sunday, January 27th at the American Legion Post #1479, Auxiliary members, community members and students volunteered their time to pack up boxes for the soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thank you to Paulette White who was instrumental in organizing and collecting from the employees of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, which included donations from the Senior’s Center. Donations were also received from Harvey and Marlene Arquette, the late Harvey and Genevieve Tarbell’s children who donated items received at their annual family christmas dinner, Cecilia Lafrance, Darlene Thompson and Grace & Allan Discount Tobacco Products, Marlene Roberts, Barbara Barnes, Chico and Jackie Cree-Arquette, and the Log Cabin Smoke Shop. If I forgot anyone it was unintentional. Also, thank you to Mamie David and Amber Herne who help with the labels and forms for each box.

A special treat for the soldiers were valentines handmade by the students at the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk School. Thank you to Beth Lazore for heading this activity so the children could be included in this effort. The valentines were outstanding. Another thank you goes out to Mohawk Council of Akwesasne for the donation of money to cover postage costs. The amount of $300. was matched by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #1479. Barbara White, Chuck House and Geraldine Jacobs also donated money for postage. It came just in time, because 39 boxes were packed and are ready to go.

It was a great turn out and thank you to everyone for helping. Again, if you know of anyone serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, please send their name and address to dcook@indiantime.net or call Debbie or Mamie at Indian Time newspaper at 315-358-9531 or 613-575-2063 and they will receive packages at their home.

Sincerely,

Debbie Cook-Jacobs
