A Voice from the Eastern Door

Fifty-four families participate in literacy event

Tsi Snaihne School celebrated Family Literacy Day on Friday, January 25th.

Students invited family members to the school from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. to enjoy some literacy-related activities in the gym.  Approximately 54 families enjoyed spending time together playing many different fun-filled games. Some of the stations included Alphabet Twister, Bingo, a Puppet Theatre, a Comfy Corner for Reading, Sight Word Match-It Race, Alphabet Puzzles and a variety of board games.  A bountiful snack area was prepared by the kitchen staff: Anita Mitchell and Crystal Ransom.

Door prizes were awarded throughout the morning.  The families of Ashleigh Cook, Oniehtase Laffin and Teeweewes Swamp each won a $20 gift card to Walden’s in Massena. The families of Donovan Lauzon, Tokwas Benedict, Mya Tarbell, Tionna David, Raeann Oakes, Edith Rybke and Isaac Benedict all received a book to take home.

Family Literacy Day is officially held on January 27th of each year in Canada.

Family literacy refers to the many ways families develop and use literacy skills, from enjoying a storybook together at bedtime and during the day, to playing word games, singing, writing to a relative or friend, sharing day-to-day tasks such as making a shopping list or using a recipe, and surfing the Internet for fun and interesting sites.
