A Voice from the Eastern Door
In Northern Athletic Conference action, the Massena Central wrestlers defeated Ogdensburg by a score of 30-12. This took place on Friday, Jan. 11 at OFA.
The weight divisions began at 112 for Steve LaClair, 145 for Phil Barreiro, and 160 for Shane Burnett, who all defeated their OFA opponents by decision. Thomas Barreiro successfully pinned his match up against Devin Parish at :49. Another Ahkwesahsne wrestler was present but couldn’t compete due to OFA not having a competitor for him. Abe Francis has started to wrestle this year and said he enjoys it.
Everyday the practices last for three hours to get these wrestlers conditioned. There are bouts for the wrestlers to earn points. Two three-minute bouts are timed with a third bout used to break ties. The various holds earn points for the players, the highest score from 1-5 produces the winner. The official awards the wrestler points for throws and for getting his opponent to the floor on his back- in what’s called a “pin”.
Wrestling is a sport that causes players to grapple their opponents to the mat using various holds. This sport demands concentration, strategy and strength. It is an enjoyable sport to watch especially to see two young men who are so talented at what they do. Tom and Phil have really helped the Massena Wrestling Team and these seniors have taken their sport very seriously all these years. Best wishes to you as you both proceed with this season and continue wrestling. It is always nice to hear about Ahkwesahsne students doing well, so, Abe we’ll be watching for you too.
