A Voice from the Eastern Door

Good Grief

Author: Lolly Winston

This is the first book by this author that I have read, but judging on how good this book is I would read more. Lolly Winston can make a story seem likely and relatable. This book shows how a person deals with the loss of someone so close to them.

Sophie Stanton is an emotional wreck. Her husband has just died and she feels like she should be dead as well and that life isn’t the same without him. Ethan, her husband, is gone, yet Sophie does not want to believe it and she’s comfortable thinking he’s only on a business trip. After going into work with a bathrobe and bunny slippers Sophie realizes that in order to deal with this she needs a change of scenery. So she moves to Oregon. In Oregon she stays with her best friend Ruth and her daughter, Simone. Also while Sophie is in Oregon she meets Crystal, a 13-year old who is a pyromaniac with a huge attitude problem. Sophie also meets Drew, a handsome actor that seems to be fascinated with her; but is Sophie ready for the feelings he drudges up in her? Can she let him in while still wishing that Ethan was with her?

This really is a good book. It illustrates how someone grieves and copes with death; where one could break down in a grocery store or eat an entire family size box of Oreos. Lolly Winston shows Sophie’s grief and the loss of her husband, one good grief step at a time.
