Gingerbread decorating contest sweetens up families

The St. Regis Recreation hosted a festive family event last month just before Christmas. Families were invited to team up for a gingerbread-decorating contest.

More than fifty participants of all ages turned out to the event on Dec. 19. The St. Regis Recreation supplied them with everything they needed: Gingerbread decorating kits, Christmas music and movies, and tables full of extra candy for decorating. A goulash dinner was also served.

Families showed both their cooperation and creativity in decorating. One family broke pretzels to make a wooden fence in their gingerbread house “ yard.” Others spelled out “Merry Christmas” with icing. Parents offered guidance but children big and small were able to decorate.

The Recreation asked the Akwesasne Mohawk Police to judge the completed houses, as three prizes were given away, in addition to candy and toys every participant received.

The event was paid for with funds raised at the St. Regis Recreation’s Treasures of Christmas.
