    The Massena volleyball and football teams continued their thus-far undefeated 2016 seasons. Meanwhile, the girls soccer and swim teams added two wins to their records and the boys soccer team dropped their one match for the week. Volleyball On Sept. 23, Massena played their closest game of the year so far against Chateaugay, taking a 3-2 win. Massena won the first set 25-14, then lost the next two 17-25 and 14-25.     It was a decent week for Massena varsity sports, with the volleyball team continuing an undefeated season, the football team taking a blowout win and victories also going to the swimming and soccer squadrons. Volleyball The volleyball team took 3-0 wins over Canton and Malone. In the Sept. 12 Canton contest, Tatum Lafrance notched 11 points, 15 assists, three kills and three aces.     The fifth annual event was held last weekend at the American Legion, and the Saints took home yet another title. In the past few weeks the Saints won the Lisa Lafrance Memorial tournament and were crowned "A" division champions of the Akwesasne Co-Ed softball league.     Football Both the Massena varsity boys football and girls volleyball teams have won the opening games of their 2016 seasons, with Akwesasne athletes putting forth stalwart performances on both teams.     University of Buffalo wrestling redshirt-freshman heavyweight Nolan Terrance represented Team Canada in the United World Wrestling Junior World Championships in Macon, France a couple of weeks ago. Terrance competed in the 120 kilogram weight class in the Greco-Roman tournament. Terrance faced off against eventual runner-up Osman Yildirim of Turkey in the qualifying round and lost a tough bout 9-0.     The eighth annual event was held last weekend at the American Legion in Hogansburg and for the first time in weeks, a softball tournament was not played in unbearably high 90 temperatures. Teams were from the recently completed Akwesasne Co-ed league, and they were Lisa's All-Stars, the Warriors, Dirty Birdz, Da Cobras, the Saints, Pawn Shop, Master Batters and Last Resort.     Massena’s football and girl’s varsity soccer teams’ seasons are underway, with the gridmen pulling off a win thanks to a late scoring drive, and a loss for the lady booters. In the Sept. 2 football game against St. Lawrence Central, host Massena won 26-23 thanks to a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cedric Maurer to Nate Bressard with 2:09 left in regulation.     Another season came to an end with the annual tournament finals in Bombay. The tourney had just finished up when a huge storm hit, and heavy rains muddied the entire area.     It started off shaky, but in the end, the final game had the intensity and skill of a National tournament. The Randall "Mann" Jacobs Memorial tournament was held last weekend at the Anowarako:wa Arena and right off the bat it had the makings of a disaster. The Ottawa team did not show and Kahnawake's representative dropped out due to lack of players the morning of the event.     The Seaway Valley Venom have thus far been unable to break their unvictorious streak this season, facing three more losses to Syracuse, Sussex and Plattsburgh. Their record stands at 0-7 with three regular season games to go. On Aug. 27, they dropped an 82-13 decision to the host Plattsburgh North Stars.     Dozens of Native American students will compete on Massena Central varsity sports teams this fall. The volleyball team will look to defend the 2015 Section 10 title, which they earned following an undefeated regular season backed by several Akwesasne girls.     Another Akwesasne team took top honors in the Cornwall Soccer League. The Lady Devils of the Cornwall and District Soccer league won their Division 3 Title last week in a two game final against Les Girlz.     Last year we lost a very special person and last week a group of friends paid tribute to this brave child. The first ever tournament was held at the Anowarako:wa Arena and five teams helped pay tribute to the memory of Alex Lazore. The child fought and lost his battle with cancer. The reigning Division 1 ladies champions of the Cornwall District Soccer league faced Emard Brothers Mudders last week in a semi-final series and lost both games; 5-2 on Monday, August 15, and 4-3 on Wednesday, August 17.     The St. Regis Braves currently have a record of one-win, two-losses, with three games under their belt as they continue a five game series against the Tyendinaga Thunderbirds.
