Akwesasne players are getting ready to return to the rink and court as Massena Central basketball and hockey seasons approach their season openers. The girls varsity hockey team’s roster includes KC Herne, a returning MVP, Tori Gray and Abigail Johnson from Akwesasne. The two Akwesasne teams in the Massena Men's Broomball League won their respective games last Sunday at the Massena Arena. But both were down to the wire. In their game against Bowlmor, the Chiefs held a 3-1 late lead when Bowlmor scored in the final minute to bring them within one. Tonawanda Seneca Nation-The First Nations Junior “B” Lacrosse League (FNJLL) has expanded with an addition from Akwesasne. Officials report that at the conclusion of this past season, the league received an application from Akwesasne with intent to compete in the upcoming 2017 season. Dominating performances week after week earned the Salmon River Boys Varsity Cross Country team a Section 10 Class C Championship title at Sectionals at Norwood-Norfolk. On November 11-13, a hockey tournament was held in Kanata. The championship game was won and celebrated by the Cornwall Typhoons. The exciting back and forth game was against Oakville with a final score of 3-1. Two young ladies from Akwesasne play on the team and each made a mark to help the cause. The Massena varsity football and volleyball seasons came to an end in state Class A playoffs. The volleyball team lost 3-0 to Jamesville-DeWitt on Nov. 8 at SUNY Potsdam in the opening round of state play. They close their season with a 17-2 record, undefeated in the regular season. Congratulations to Mitchell Terrance who has committed to play Lacrosse for coach Kevin Totaro of the Missouri Valley Vikings for the upcoming Fall semester of 2017. The Massena boys and girls varsity soccer seasons came to an end in the NYSPHAA regional playoffs, while the volleyball team dropped their first game of the year but will still advance to regional play. The girls fell 4-0 to Section 3 champs Jamesville-DeWitt and the boys team 5-0 to Section 2 champs Queensbury. The Lady Devils picked up their second win of the season last weekend as they edged Les Girlz 2-1. Jenna Prieur and Iakokwennienstha Porter scored those goals. Midway through the second half Les Girlz had an excellent chance to tie as they were presented with an open net, but the ball rang off the crossbar and the Devils held on for the win. The Chiefs had a pair of back-to-back games, which turned into back-to-back shutouts last Sunday at the Massena Arena. In their first game of the doubleheader they handed the Norwood Legion a 3-0 loss. Derek Hopps, Matt Thompson and Travis Thompson scored in that win. The Massena boys and girls varsity soccer teams are headed to state tournaments, while the football team ended their regular season with a win at Tupper Lake. Following Coach Pat Henrie’s 300th career win, the Massena boys varsity soccer team will advance to the NYSPHSAA Class A tournament on Nov. 9 against the Section 2 champ.
