As the Massena girls and boys basketball teams approach the end of their seasons, the squads fashioned wins over Canton, Potsdam and Salmon River. Meanwhile, the varsity boys hockey team was defeated in both games of a Feb. 10-11 tournament at Massena Arena. The Akwesasne Wild play in the National Capital Women's Hockey League in the Senior B division. As of Tuesday, February 7, 2017, they were second in league standings. The Seaway Valley Rapids Atom AA hosted the Gloucester Rangers last weekend on Kawehno:ke and despite several excellent chances Gloucester handed them a 10-1 loss. Kaiden Pyke scored the Rapid's only goal-a second period tally-as he weaved his way from the blue line and stick-handled around the Ranger's defenders to score. The two Akwesasne based clubs had their third meeting of the Cornwall Indoor Soccer season last weekend with the Stars winning this round 2-1. Kelby Mitchell started the scoring for the Stars in the first quarter. Both teams had great chances to go ahead or tie. Akwesasne will be hosting tryouts for Team Eastern Door & the North for the upcoming North American Indigenous Games, which will be held in Toronto, Canada July 16-23, 2017. The U19 box lacrosse tryout for girls born 1998 & later will be held Friday, February 10th from 3:30-5 pm and Saturday, February 11th from 8-9:30 pm at the Benson Center, Cornwall, Ontario. The Cornwall Colts Novice team stayed with the Akwesasne Wolves for one period but then their wheels fell off. On Monday, January 30 the two clubs met on Kawehno:ke and traded first period goals. Teiowisatenion Herne for Akwesasne, and Matt Lewis for Cornwall. Kanatakon, Akwesasne - This past Thursday, January 26, 2017 the Mohawk Express and North Franklin Boys and Girls 5/6th Grade Teams squared off for games at Kanatakon School. It was the first time in several years that Kanatakon School hosted competitive basketball, going back to the days of the Alex Garrow Memorial Tournaments of years past.
