The Akwesasne Wolves Bantam girls team were edged out by Ottawa 1-0 last Sunday in Cornwall. Despite several good chances throughout the contest including a big breakaway by Rayne Arenovich in the final two minutes the Wolves couldn't solve the Ottawa goaltender. The Akwesasne entry in the National Capital Women's Hockey league held their home opener Sunday at a foggy Anowarako:wa Arena. Some of the players had just come from a tournament in Massena and if they were tired after playing at least three games they did not show it. The varsity volleyball team for another week maintained their perfect 2017 record, and the soccer, football and swim teams had mixed success in various games during the week of Oct. 9. The Can-Am Krush women's lacrosse team is taking a big step in showing the world our female lacrosse skills. Last weekend in one of their fundraising efforts for this trip to Hawaii the team held a softball tournament at the American Legion in Hogansburg. The Massena varsity football team narrowly won their first game of the year and the varsity volleyball team maintained an undefeated record. The football victory was against Canton on Sept. 29 in Massena with a 31-30 final score. Montana Pierce went 6-8 passing for 111 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception. The Anowarako:wa Arena was freezing cold as the ice is in the process of being installed for hockey. Outside of the arena it was crazy hot as the women took to the field for lacrosse. Ottawa U was in town last week as well as McGill University to take part in a mini-tournament with the CAN-AM Krush Women's field lacrosse club. Akwesasne - The Akwesasne Eagles Youth Flag Football club hosted its sixth annual flag football tournament Saturday, September 23rd at Generations Park. Nine North Country youth teams participated with players ranging from Kindergarten through 2nd grade. After four days of box lacrosse action at Massena Arena, the Mohawk Medicine Men are the 2017 Nations Cup champions. Competing teams also included the Akwesasne Thunder, Seneca Marksmen, Kahnawake Hunters, Caughnawaga Indians, Western Rez Boys, Onondaga Red Hawks and Ohsweken Aces.
