(5/13/2017) Onondaga Women’s Lacrosse was defeated by Howard Community College, 16-10, in the NJCAA National Semifinal game hosted at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland. The defeat ended the Lazers season with an overall record of 9-4. Onondaga had a two point deficit at halftime, adding two goals in the opening minutes to tie the game at nine. The 2017 Senior B Three Nations Lacrosse League season got off to exciting start as Akwesasne's St. Regis Braves and Snake Island Muskies battled out on opening night at Massena Arena. Massena’s varsity softball team won a doubleheader against Salmon River before going on to beat Canton. Meanwhile, the varsity baseball team dropped a decision to Canton but defeated Casselman in a no-hitter. On May 3 in Massena, the softball team beat Salmon River in the twin bill match 21-3 and 15-5. The Cornwall Celtics provided rough, hard-hitting, fast-passing, lacrosse 40 years ago against Akwesasne. Last weekend that same spirit repeated itself on Kawehnoke. The Akwesasne Storm lacrosse program hosted their counterparts from across the river and like the rivalry 40 years ago there was hard hits, near fights, blowouts, hot goaltending and crisp passing plays. Massena's varsity softball team had another game suspended before losing to OFA and getting redemption in their next game. Meanwhile, the baseball team is on a four-game slide. The softball team had a tie game with OFA suspended in the seventh, then fell to the same team the next night but got redemption with a win over Potsdam. On Friday April 28th, 2017 the Arena hosted an open house for the community. At 5pm, tables were set up for parents and children to see what other activities and sports were available to the community. One table featured The Akwesasne Skating Club. This once big and successful skating club, which ended in 2009, is now on again. This will be their upcoming third season, which runs from October 2017 to March 2018. The Massena lacrosse teams each had decent weeks, with each team winning two games and losing one. The varsity girls lacrosse team turned back Northwood Prep and Heuvelton but lost to Canton. On April 24, the squad bested Northwood Prep 10-8 in non-league play. Massena worked up to a 6-2 lead by halftime then played solid defense in the second half to hold on to the game. The Salmon River Boys Basketball 12U - AAU squad came in to the North Country Shootout (Brooke Lyon Remembrance) Tournament and defended their Championship Title from 2016. On Friday night, the Boys defeated a talented Chateaugay squad by 20 and just a few hours later took down an 12 U Malone squad, 83-46. Two teams from Akwesasne travelled to Waterloo, Ontario to compete in the OVA Provincials. The three-day tournament began on Friday April 21st and ended Sunday April 23rd, with the final playoffs. The Akwesasne Soaring Eagles 12U and 18U girls' team participated and played their hearts out. They showed great pride and skill throughout the three-day tournament.
