  • Attention Community Members

    Jan 9, 2020

December 22, 2019 At the December Monthly Meeting I, Ruth Bell, made a motion that a committee be formed to review our Procedures Act. The motion passed. The purpose of the committee would be to review and make recommendations for changes which would then have to be voted on by referendum. The Procedures Act came about because there came a time that the community realized that there needed to be rules and regulations to help guide the chiefs when making decisions that would affect ourselves, our children and our grandchildren’s future. At t...

Hi, my name is Edward, I am the new FedEx driver for the Akwesasne village. It seems that there is a very big problem with people not getting their packages delivered through the FedEx service. I am proud to say I have the Hogansburg Route now and it is very difficult to find many great people and there is a major critical reason. We at FedEx would proudly and assure delivery to everyone in the USA and we only need one very important thing, we are not robots, nor are we not on your side, we ask only you display your address in a number on your...

September 16, 20 l 9 Dear Editor: SAVE OUR BUILDING!!! That is what the signs read in front of our Tribal building on Route 37. We need to have a substantive discussion on the merits of making use of this resource of our community. The present Council has awarded a contract for the demolition of the building to make a parking lot!!! Surely, we as a community can come up with many useful ideas for this space. The Tribe has poisoned the public perception of this space by stating that it is full of asbestos, unsound foundation, etc. etc. Some of...

August 12, 2019 Dear Editor, On Saturday at the Tribal meeting there were several references to the lawsuit, now in our Tribal Court, over how the last Tribal election was conducted. The chair did admit that there was a Tribal Court case over the past election but did not explain or elaborate. Then a question was asked whether the council had a quorum to conduct the meeting in light of that lawsuit. The quick answer was they were sworn in! This whole situation comes about because of the makeup of the Election Board. The law governing our electi...

Dear Reader: Most of us know someone who is struggling with loss of memory, judgment, language, complex motor skills, and other intellectual function. These are a group of symptoms used to describe dementia. This can present as challenges with memory (can’t recall eating breakfast BUT can tell stories about family meals), concentration (enjoys playing cards, but is easily distracted by noises or conversation), orientation (not aware of time of day, season, location), language (unable to find the words to have conversation or returns to using F...

Letter to the Editor June 24, 2019 I have been reading and rereading a letter that I received from The Saint Regis Mohawk Election Board dated June 12, 2019 stating that my letter which they received June 12, 2019 appealing for a Special Election missed the deadline for submitting appeals to call for a Special Election on the grounds of procedural irregularities for the 2019 Tribal Election. The deadline was June 7, 2019. Their letter went on to state “As this deadline has expired, the Election Board will not proceed with reviewing your s...

  • There is a large sign on Rt. 37: SWEARING-IN CELEBRATION JULY 1 at 11a.m.

    Jun 27, 2019

Dear Editor: There is a large sign on Rt. 37: SWEARING-IN CELEBRATION JULY 1 at 11a.m. This announcement is a little premature since there are challenges as to how this past election was conducted. Central to the issue is: there was never a valid Election Board to conduct any part of the past election. From the lead up to the Caucus, subsequent hearings and the election itself along with the subsequent challenges. There was never a legal election board put into place. Part of this swearing-in procedure is Chiefs take an oath to uphold the laws...

  • Sekon/Hello:

    Jun 27, 2019

Sekon/Hello: After nine years into my retirement I decided to go back to work. I now work for the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Resort. I would like to give it Kudos. The Casino has given many young and old individuals the opportunity to work in this versatile work environment, including me. I’ve met so many young men and women who truly are happy they work there and above all have a job. It’s given them the opportunity to learn new skills, have a positive attitude and to treat each other and customers with respect. After all, if it wer...

5/14/2019 I have appreciated over the years receiving Indian Time. As you explained in the beginning to a friend of mine, that this was just a local newspaper and this is something I have found to be true though not always. Myself, moving away, then back to New Bedford where I lived for nearly 50 years, the familiarity of this place is home. A Tuscarora friend in Rochester has been glad to receive clippings from me, especially the latest on the Residential Schools of which she and her grandmother took part. By her encouragement our library in...

New cars and money were the phrases most heard that would happen if the referendum for a casino was passed. The referendum was passed and yes, we do receive benefits from the casino. Fuel allotments, electric bills for elders 65 years old and many programs for our youth. Sadly, Tribal Council have used these benefits in threatening ways that cause a lot of fear among our people. The fear method is to say programs will have to be eliminated should another needed program be added. That fear method is to say will be denied for sure. In the meantim...

CKON just announced that the Employment Center is moving. I understand that the old building they were in really had many problems and they needed to move. Having attended Tribal Monthly meetings over the past years, I have heard of and then seen the building of a multi-million dollar building. That building would house all SRMT’s programs in a central location. After occupation has taken place, we find that we are still paying for many of our programs to be housed in rental properties! In this case we moved them out of a $1,000 a month to a $...

I truly believe everyone has a voice. Everyone has a story, many stories, and they need to be heard. I have a voice; as an individual, a woman, a mom, a sister, an aunt and definitely as a grandmother. As a community member. As an editor – I have a voice. I started working at Indian Time in 2014. Since then I haven’t written but one Editorial. As an Editor of Indian Time, and as most editors chose to do – I could write an Editorial weekly. Yea, you can thank me now. A few weeks back one of our reporters wrote a Guest Editorial. Since then,...

To the Community from a Concerned Elder: I am a concerned community member who is very troubled by the events of this past weekend. I was going past the Police Station and saw the lawlessness. The sight of it will stay with me for the rest of my life. I don’t know what you have in your head. You claim to be of the Longhouse but the people that I know who are of the Longhouse don’t act like you were acting. They are good people who believe in their culture, follow their traditions and care about this community. That’s not what I saw. I saw p...

I would like to know why we always spend thousands of dollars for needless reasons? The old Tribal Admin building is slated to be demolished to make room for additional parking for the Health Clinic. This building was built in the late 1970’s using steel and reinforced concrete, by men of this community. In terms of a usable life, it isn’t very old. It was originally designed to be a one story open-spaced gathering spot for meetings and other community functions. The offices that were originally there, were made up of moveable partitions (cu...

Dear Indian Time & Ms. Jaclyn Hall, In the January 24, 2019 (Vol. 37 #3) issue of Indian Time Newspaper, an editorial (opinion) piece was published and written by Ms. Jaclyn Hall, titled "Akwesasne Unites Over Dundee Land Claim Appeals." Due to appeals that have been filed, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has yet to publicly respond to the results of the Tsikaristisere/Dundee referendum. While the appeal process is underway, however, we are committed to continuing the education process to...

Indian Time received this letter from our dear friend Tom Porter in Kanatsiohareke. The letter was written by Laura Boak, expressing her heartfelt apology to all Native Americans. Tom wanted ‘to share this message to all our people’. Dear Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Community and Chief Dr. Thomas Porter, My name is Laura Boak. I live in Alabama with my husband and children. I was originally born and raised near Salt Lake City, Utah to parents who are of white Anglo European ancestry. These ancestors of mine came to America as settlers starting fro...

On behalf of the Sharenho:wane wolf clan of the Ronathahion:ni Path Makers of the Kanien’keha:ka, I do hereby notify the government of Canada and its agency, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne that we reject the proposed Dundee settlement and will not be bound by any of its provisions. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is a creation of Canada and was imposed upon the Sharenho:wane clan and Kanien’keha:ka using force and coercion including the murder of one of our leaders and the imprisonment of our rightful leaders. Akwesasne Community Members, Abuse of our frail and vulnerable Elders takes place every day by the people they trust most, their caregivers. The signs of abuse are evident but no one takes action, either out of fear of retaliation or because of their own personal agenda. Your long term care facility used to enjoy a good reputation of providing excellent care for the Residents but all that has changed. Now, current Residents can’t wait for their ‘first choice’ of a long term care home to have an open bed offer so they can move out of Tsiio...

Letter to the Editor, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Indian Time’s Kanienkeha translators, Dorothy Karihwenhawe Lazore and Mary Iotenerahtatenion Arquette, for the work they do to render newspaper articles into our native language. It was such an honor to see my article about the Akwesasne Historical Markers fully translated in the September 27th edition of Indian Time. This had to have been a lot of work to have it ready in so short a time. I really do appreciate it. Even though my Kanienkeha isn’t the greatest, I took the tim...

Editor, Several years ago, one of the Mohawk district chiefs expressed interest in a ferry service operating between Snye and the southeastern side of Cornwall Island. I advised the then district chief that a First Nations band in British Columbia had a kinetic ferry, a ferry powered by river current, operating across narrow section of the Fraser River and suggested that the same concept might be possible in the Mohawk Akwesasne region. The then district chief expressed concern about schedule conflicts with ships that sail along the St...

Editor – Indian Time Some three decades back I was extended famous Akwesasne hospitality and wish to repay the favor. After travelling the world to help nature. From the Andes of South America, the Inca were some of the planet’s finest farmers who used to energize their seed before planting it. This can be done with magnets today under the seed for under an hour, or magnetizing the water on the plant. Natural seed varieties can be obtained from Seed Savers Exchange of Decorah, Iowa or Richter’s Seeds of Goodwood, Ontario. No chemicals neces...
