  • Book: A Rose for Melinda

    Delia McDonald|Jul 10, 2008

The article this week is about a book that I have read numerous times for its well-written and tear jerking qualities. Lurlene McDaniel will always go down as one of my favorite authors because she writes so well and even though her stories are sad…they always seem to end up having happy endings. Melinda Skye and Jesse Rose have been friends since the first grade, when they had exchanged their first set of notes in class. Jesse had taken an instant liking to Melinda. Their relationship continued over their junior and partway through high s...

  • Book: The Adventures of Bottom the Basset Hound

    Delia McDonald|Jun 26, 2008
    1

Last week a reader of my column sent me a book to review. I would like to thank this person for the gift and suggestion. Bottom is a young basset hound who after she got into a bit of trouble, was sold to a family that lives on a farm. Bottom instantly loves her new home and family. Her family, the Napshyrs, have two young daughters, Janet and Jill. Bottom meets an array of new animals that become her friends. As time passes, she begins to grow older and soon her new family thinks that maybe its time for her to have puppies. Bottom vows to be...

  • Book: The Tenth Circle

    Delia McDonald|Jun 12, 2008

I’ve heard many good things about Jodi Picoult so I thought that this week, I’d give her a try. I am greatly impressed by the way she writes. Her stories are both believable and interesting. Trixie Stone’s school year had started off great, she had a boyfriend that she loved and parents that loved her. Trixie’s winter though…takes a drastic drop. When her boyfriend Jason breaks up with her, she feels as though her whole world has been severed. Trixie is willing to do anything to get him back and have things as they were, so she and her best fri...

  • Book: Go Ask Alice

    Delia McDonald|May 29, 2008

For 35 years, this book has shown the true effects of drugs and the consequences that some actually do face. This is the diary of a drug addict. “Alice” was 14 years old when she had her first drink laced with LSD. Even thought she didn’t know it was there, she still relished in the effect it had on her. She could touch stars and hear colors. Alice immediately got hooked on the drug and begins hanging with the people she knows can get her what she wants. After a while though, Alice begins to realize that maybe this is stupid, maybe she shoul...

  • Book: Wake

    Delia McDonald|May 15, 2008

This book, though odd in how it’s written, is actually really interesting and fun to read. Lisa McMann creates a compelling novel about a girl with an odd gift. Janie has never been normal. She has a certain…ability to see things. More specifically, peoples dreams. Whether she’s awake or asleep, Janie is drawn into dreams that are not her own, in fact she rarely has one of her own dreams. One particular nightmare was completely terrifying. Janie is afraid to be drawn into this dream again, knowing the terror that waits, that she should have...

  • Book: Alaska Twilight

    Delia McDonald|May 8, 2008

If you should desire it, this book is about facing your fears and overcoming your obstacles. Colleen Coble shows you how even when fear and dread overcome you.  I’d recommend this book to adults who love a good love story with a little suspense and drama. Haley has never been able to cope with the loss of her sister, she blames herself for her death and she believes that her parents did to. Tank Lessiter has just started to get over his wife’s death. He and his sister Libby are raising his daughter all by themselves since his wife Leigh...

  • Book: Good Girls

    Delia McDonald|May 1, 2008

This book is a truly good book, just the right amount of drama and humor. Laura Ruby is one that I will definitely read again. Audrey is a straight A and all around good student, so when gorgeous boy Luke comes into her life….she’s amazed that someone like him could actually like her. Even though Luke’s known to get around, Audrey couldn’t help falling for him, and loving his attention. One night at a party that one of Audrey’s friends was throwing she sees Luke and they end up getting together. While they were alone, someone took a picture o...

  • Book: Marked

    Delia McDonald|Apr 10, 2008

Vampires seem to be a very popular subject this year with writers. This week I’ve read yet another book about vampires and giving another rendition of them entirely. This one is from the view of a school for vampires. The way to become a vampire differs in this book from the usual catch ‘em and bite ‘em on the neck approach. In this story; a tracker finds you and marks you, thus starting the change from human to vampire. Once you’ve been marked, you get sent to a school where they teach you the skills you need. Even though you’ve been mark...

  • Book: This is How it Happened

    Delia McDonald|Apr 10, 2008

Here is a book that will entertain the women out there who have been wronged by men. The author, Jo Barrett, creates a funny and interesting story of an angry woman who is ready for revenge. Madeline “Maddy” Piatro was engaged to her “fiancée” Carlton for 4 years, and, in her opinion, 4 perfect years. Maddy thought things were going great until Carlton started acting funny and all of a sudden decided that she shouldn’t work at the company they built together and that he didn’t want to be with her anymore. He essentially destroyed her life. He...

  • Morning Light

    Delia McDonald|Apr 3, 2008

Yet another humorous and exciting book this week. Catherine Anderson has written many books but this is the first book I’ve read by her. The story line was immediately captivating. Loni McEwen has a special gift of second sight, in which she has visions. Clint Herrigan, the busy and handsome cowboy doesn’t believe in psychics. So when Loni comes to Clint with information about a vision she had of his son, which he doesn’t know he has, he shoves her out the door. Loni had seen his son getting in a rafting accident and ending up all alone in th...

  • Book: City of Bones

    Delia McDonald|Mar 27, 2008

This book is a fantasy that is so well written that it could be real. I love this author; Cassandra Clare, who is one to watch out for. This book is a page turner and very exciting read. Clary Fray has never considered herself as more then normal, until she witnesses a murder that was committed by men that only she can see. Clary reacts on instinct and tries to stop these men, only to find out that these aren’t just normal men. They are Shadowhunters, and the man they were trying to kill was a demon. Clary is put through a whirlwind of c...

  • Book: Feeling Sorry For Celia

    Mar 20, 2008

This book is in an interesting format. It’s entirely letters and notes between a whole cast of interesting characters. It’s really an interesting book because it’s very humorous and entertaining. Elizabeth had only one best friend, Celia. Celia has a habit of running away from home, sometimes days, sometimes weeks, leaving Elizabeth to deal with her disappearances. Elizabeth is forced by her English teacher to write a letter to a pen-pal at another school, Christina. They soon begin, after only a few letters, to become good friends. Eliza...

  • Book: The Testament

    Delia McDonald|Mar 13, 2008

The genre of this book is a little different from what I’m used to reading but I think that’s why I thought it was so good. This is the only book I’ve read that can be categorized as legal suspense and I actually found it to be very interesting.   It begins with billionaire Troy Phalen. Before he died he made a hand written holographic will leaving everything to an illegitimate daughter that seems impossible to find.  When Josh Stafford, the lawyer to the now deceased Mr. Phalen, tells Troy’s 6 children about this new will that has cut them fr...

  • Book: SPEAK

    Delia McDonald|Feb 21, 2008

I would use one word to describe this book: Interesting. This is the only book that I have read that is written in what seems to be a monolog format. Anderson writes the characters thoughts, what she is feeling and thinking. It may seem strange but in my opinion that’s what makes it good. Melinda Sordino is a freshman in high-school, but what she has been through is anything but a normal 14 year-old girl’s experience. She can’t speak of it, even though her head screams “Say Something”! She cannot bear to think of it much less talk about it....

  • Book: Nights in Rodanthe

    Delia McDonald|Feb 14, 2008

Is it possible to fall in love in less then a week? Well if you are a little skeptical, once you read this book and witness the emotions that Nicholas Sparks bestows on you, you will think otherwise. He really is my favorite author. Adrienne Willis has been divorced for a few months, as has Paul Flanner. When Paul comes to Rodanthe on business, he stays at the Bed & Breakfast that Adrienne is watching for a friend who is out of town. They connect almost instantly without realizing it or wanting to. They soon find they can tell each other...

  • A Great and Terrible Beauty

    Delia McDonald|Feb 7, 2008

This book has it all: the suspense, the drama, and even a hint of romance to go with it. This is the first book I’ve read by Libby Bray. It’s a success. Gamma Doyle has just arrived at Spence Academy for girls. She soon realizes that she is very different from the other girls. Gamma was raised in India, so she is not up to date in the fashions nor does she know any of the things that the other girls have already been taught. Something had happened to Gamma that caused her to be sent to this awful school. Tragedy in her family and some wei...

  • Vampire Academy

    Jan 31, 2008

This book gives you a whole new idea of vampires. The vampire myths you’ve heard have all been changed. New species of vampires are invented. Richelle Mead is really fun and original. I would read more books by this author Rose Hathaway is a dhampir, a half-breed of human and vampire blood. Rose is Lissa’s best friend and protector, since Lissa is a Moroi princess and is wanted by the strogoi as one of their own. Strogoi are ruthless and strong vampires and they want Lissa. Rose and Lissa had run away from St. Vladimir’s School in order to es...

  • Good Grief

    Delia McDonald|Jan 24, 2008

This is the first book by this author that I have read, but judging on how good this book is I would read more. Lolly Winston can make a story seem likely and relatable. This book shows how a person deals with the loss of someone so close to them. Sophie Stanton is an emotional wreck. Her husband has just died and she feels like she should be dead as well and that life isn’t the same without him. Ethan, her husband, is gone, yet Sophie does not want to believe it and she’s comfortable thinking he’s only on a business trip. After going into work...

  • The Choice

    Delia McDonald|Jan 17, 2008

Yet again another stunning novel by Nicholas Sparks who really knows how to pull on your heartstrings. I have found that with Nicholas Sparks’ novels you experience love through his eyes. This is one of my favorite books by him. This is the story of Travis Parker and Gabby Holland. Travis, age 36, has never really been in love; his friends tell him that he is afraid of commitment because he can’t sustain a lasting relationship with a woman. He, as with all people with this problem, denies it. This all changes when Gabby Holland moves in next do...
