The Ànowaràkowa Arena staff did a great job this past Saturday, September 16th 2017 hosting their Fall Country Fest. The Festival started during the day with local artists and vendors set up inside and out of the Arena from 1 pm to 6 pm. The Akwesasne Cancer Support Group held a Memorial Candle Walk on Sunday, September 16, 2017. Under still sunny skies and temps around 80 degrees at 5pm, walkers registered and took to walking the Tewatahita Trails. Over 30 walkers participated and later in the evening, carried candles for a loved one who has passed. The ravages of cancer affect every person living in Akwesasne. SUNY Potsdam will host its sixth annual Suicide Awareness Walk on Saturday, Sept. 23, starting outside Thatcher Hall. Registration will open at 11 a.m., and the walk will begin promptly at noon. The campus walk is sponsored by the College Counseling Center and the Jeffrey Kimball Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Awareness. The walk will raise funds to support the foundation’s work at SUNY Potsdam and in the surrounding communities to save lives through prevention and awareness. The 17th Annual Akwesasne International Powwow took place this past weekend, September 9th and 10th, 2017. The weekend turned out to be a warm and beautiful one, with many coming out to enjoy the event. This year the powwow also provided free shuttles for folks to get picked up in Cornwall. The free shuttles were a nice way to help many get to the powwow, whether they had no vehicle or not enough money to pay the toll both. Massena village police have arrested a fourth suspect in connection with an August shooting and stabbing. On Sept. 8, police charged Richard A. Herne, 36, of Akwesasne with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary. Kanento Boots, 63, of Akwesasne, Ontario, Canada, was sentenced Sept. 11 to time served (111 days in jail) and one year of supervised release for illegally transporting an alien within the United States, according to Acting United States Attorney Grant C.
