On Saturday, March 18th, Akwesasne Tri-District Elders held their Quilt Show at the Kahwenoke Recreation Centre. The event took place most of the day and began with a showcase of all the quilted creations on display. All the quilts were made by local artisans of Akwesasne, and admission to this event was free. On March 1st, Salmon River Middle School held their annual science fair. Students were partnered up to put together an elaborate science fair project that would be judged by a panel of various people in the community. Out of all of the projects, a select few were chosen to move on to the Terra Northeast Regional Science and Engineering Fair hosted at SUNY Potsdam. A garage fire slowed traffic down to one lane for about two hours on Route 37, just east of the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino on March 22, 2017. Several hundred people came out to the Children's Powwow, hosted by the Native North American Traveling College on March 11 at the former First Americans IGA. Young dancers ranging from toddlers to teens got to demonstrate various dances and learn how a powwow works, guided by older lead dancers. "The responsibilities of the lead dancers were to be role models for the young dancers. Snowplow Records is happy to announce the release of "Shine On! Shine On!" the first CD by the River Mohawk Band. Originally a band of brothers and cousins from the Snye area of Akwesasne, the group has had various members throughout the years.
