It became very evident that the women MUST do something about the colonial, unilateral and paternalistic legislation being pushed through the...

I was glad to see the letter from Vaughn Phillips concerning his frustration with Leon’s. I also am frustrated with the customer service I received from Leon’s. Our children bought a leather double recliner for my husband for his birthday. We loved it, until the handle broke. They came and repaired it, but not right away. It broke a second time. It would take a while before the repairman could come here so they said if we wanted to pick up the part, my husband could probably fix it because they said it’s not hard to fix. I didn’t want to wait...

There is still a political and social fight for the VAWA. Although it is at a stalemate in US Congress, last week congressmen introduced H.R. 6625, a new stand-alone House version of VAWA, which contains language to address tribal court jurisdiction and judicial parity in prosecuting non-Indian defendants. Meetings were held last week and they are a sign that progress is being made. Native women are murdered at 10 times the national rate; 1 out of 3 Native women will be raped in her lifetime, and 3 out of 5 physically assaulted. Even worse,...

December 17, 2012 Letters to the Editor: THE POLICE SHOULD SAY, “LET’S THANK THOSE MOHAWKS.” We Mohawks of Akwesasne, Kahnesatake, and Kahnawake should be given a great big “Thank You” by those burly, “armed to the teeth,” RCMP, OPP, CBSA, and CCPS officers who are patrolling the dangerous St. Lawrence River waterways. We are making it possible for these uniformed juggernauts to earn their $100,000.00 to $130,000.00 a year salaries. They earn these huge salaries by constantly gazing across these treacherous water expanses, looking inten...
