    The tax fight between tribes and New York State regarding the sale of cigarettes at reservation stores to non-Natives continued this week. Gov. David Paterson signed a bill Monday that could result in the loss of hundreds of jobs at tribally owned stores throughout the state. The bill makes suppliers liable for applying tax to cigarettes sold to wholesalers, who would in turn need to certify that the tax will be applied when they supply tribal retailers. A failure to do so would subject them to a loss of license and charges of perjury. While...

    Businesses and community members showed their generous spirit in large numbers last Friday and in the days following as the Mountain of Toys and Christmas Basket Drive was underway. At their main fundraising event at the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department boxes upon boxes of toys were delivered and thousands of dollars in monetary donation were made.     The Canada Customs has once again seized a large amount of cash from Akwesasne community members passing through the border on Cornwall Island. Two girls, ages 18 and 14, were attempting to cross through the Port of Entry on Dec. 7 when an agent flagged them for a secondary inspection. Authorities said a search of the vehicle uncovered $217,000 in Canadian currency.     From Friday to Sunday, December 12th to 14th, a Surface Ice Rescue course was held at Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD) Station No. 3 in Snye.
