    Akwesasne caught Olympic fever this week and on Monday hundreds of people gathered at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island) where the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay made a stop.   • Tribe will raise cigarette fees by $2 per carton

    The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council announced Saturday that they plan to raise cigarette fees they impose at tribally licensed businesses. Chief Mark Garrow said the $2 increase will apply “across the board” to both national and local brands and that money from the increase will be used solely to fund additional health care needs at the tribe. “As much as I hate to raise fees, the need is greater,” Chief Garrow said.   • Last man wanted in connection with Simonds murder captured

    An Akwesasne man wanted in connection with the robbery and murder of 31-year-old Daniel Simonds last year has been arrested and remains in custody. Derek Cook, 29 of Racquette Point, Akwesasne had been on the run since July of 2008 when federal officials issued an indictment that named him and several others for their alleged roles in the incident. Cook and six other men are accused of plotting to rob Simonds of marijuana and money at his Stockholm, NY home on May 13, 2008.     Akwesasne’s newest sports store is now open for business, offering a variety of lacrosse and hockey equipment. T-19 Sports is located to AK Gas on Route 37 at the east end of the territory.     The Seniors Center held their annual Christmas party on Dec. 11. The event was well attended with over 115 people. All were treated to an elegant and delicious meal of prime rib, baked potatoes, squash, and cake made by the wonderful cooks of the Seniors Center.   • Akwesasne man found with over 20 lbs of marijuana

    A former St. Regis Mohawk Tribe chief was arrested Saturday night when police allegedly found him to be in possession of 23 lbs. of marijuana. State police said Phillip H. Tarbell, age 67 of Route 37, Hogansburg was traveling on Route 11 in the town of Adams when he was stopped by police for undisclosed reasons. Police then discovered that Tarbell was in possession of a large quantity of marijuana. Tarbell was arraigned in the town of LeRay and remanded to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety building where he was later released on $1,500 bail....
