By Kyrie Ransom and Shannon Burns On Friday, Dec. 10, the Akwesasne community showed the size of their hearts during the season of giving when they helped raise $58,000 for those in need during the holidays. The 14th Annual Akwesasne Basket Drive and Mountain of Toys was held at the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department Station #1 with people pouring in throughout the day to deliver bags full of toys or to drop off monetary donations. Akwesasne community members of all ages turned out f...

  • Cig tax delayed until March

    Shannon Burns|Dec 16, 2010

The back-and-forth court battle between New York State and Indian tribes continued this past week with the latest ruling favoring (for the time being) Akwesasne and the other tribal communities fighting the state’s cigarette tax imposition. On Dec. 9, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals denied a motion filed by the state that would have lifted an injunction granted previously to the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. The injunction prevents New York from enforcing a cigarette tax law that requires tribes in New York to tax non-Natives purchasing major bra...

  • Dear Editor

    Dec 16, 2010

Dear Editor, Based upon the recent agenda of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council, the topic of the Kanienkehaka Territory of Ganienkeh remains as pressing as ever to the state-recognized trustee “Chiefs”. To be clear, there is nothing new about tribal discomfort with the free-thinking of the variety that gave birth to the Ganienkieh settlement(s). In October of 2010, two letters were sent by the Tribal Council to the state of New York. The first letter was coyly written and only hinted at the Ganienkeh Territory. The second letter was mor...

  • Dear Editor

    Dec 16, 2010

Dear Editor, Last week Keith N. Terrance expressed some thoughts about our problems with New York State, though I think his discussion is misleading. Some of the issues he raised cannot be lumped together in the same legal discussion. Gaming and our right to economic development through retailing are separate issues. As a tribal member and an advocate for Tribal policies as they relate to specific State/Tribal agreements involving gaming, I have to say that Keith’s interpretation of Chief Mark Garrow’s role in protecting our casino is wro...

  • A Visionary Statement

    Dec 16, 2010

A Visionary Statement: It is December 31, 2011. After a year of trial and tribulation in 2010, we have realized that we come from a community that has historically been strong, caring and that we have the ability to see what is in front of us, evaluate and take action to make sure our children are safe, healthy, happy and strong. Since the marking of the New Year in 2011, it has been very promising, as we have all done our part and worked hard to ensure that Akwesasne lives on. We have taken the responsibility as parents of the children that...

In the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, who is George Bailey’s guardian angel? If you can answer this question then you should have attended the Kids Trivia Night at the Snye Recreation Centre last Thursday. This event was co-hosted by the Snye Recreation Committee and the St. Regis Mohawk School Parent Teacher Organization. No, the guardian angel is not Roger Mitchell or Joe Lazore as some seem to believe, though they did both attend this event along with the 21 teams that were registered. Each...

Anything that stresses your body will increase fat storage and decrease toning. The metabolic system in your body that deals with stress uses fat as its’ main fuel source so the more stressed you are the more your body will store extra fat.
