    Shannon Burns|Dec 11, 2008

Students of the St. Regis Mohawk School’s younger grades performed in the traditional holiday concert Tuesday morning. Despite a new venue at their temporary home at Salmon River Central, the students performed like nothing had changed. Parents of the students needed to drive a little further to watch their children perform but they enjoyed the spacious, comfortable auditorium at Salmon River. Shannon Burns|Dec 11, 2008

Elders in Akwesasne were invited to a free holiday dinner last Thursday put on for them by the St. Regis Recreation Committee. Every year, one recreation center in Akwesasne invites the elders for a meal and entertainment. More than 100 elders accepted the invitation and few regretted it, as they gushed over what a nice time and meal they had. At around 11 a.m. the elders began arriving to the elaborately decorated St. Regis Recreation Centre. Since it was raining, two young boys were sent out...

  • Dear Indian Time

    Dec 11, 2008

Dear Indian Time, I wrote this poem the other day I wanted to know if you could print it. I wrote it for all our people young and old that are incarcerated like myself. If you are locked up and reading this stay strong. Your not alone. Niawen Kowa Kanietoton “totos” Swamp SITUATIONS Oh, how my mind seeks rest, Oh how my soul seeks a friend, My soul still goes without, Because of the situation I’M in. It causes destruction and disgrace. It even caused the ones who loved me, To disappear before my face. Some lasted for a winter, Some throu...

The following letter by Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Grand Chief Tim Thompson is in response to a recent article that appeared in Ohio State University’s The Lantern. Indian Time is not reprinting the article. See Ian Boots’ response on this page also. Your publication and its reporter James Pallitto owe a much-deserved apology to Ohio State hockey player Ian Boots and the Mohawk community of Akwesasne. As with all communities, we take pride in supporting the academic, athletic and other achievements of our youth. Akwesasne residents were, the...

  • Vet to Vets

    Dec 11, 2008

The month of November was a month to remember our deceased and living veterans and to be thankful for all that we have received. These two reasons are closely connected because we would not have freedom without our veterans. People today forget this because they have had freedom all of their lives. Talk to immigrants who have lived under dictatorships and communism. Also speak to mothers who have lost a loved one in the war. Post 1479 lost eleven members this year. Please remember Michael Benedict, Joseph G. Buckshot, John Chubb, Ernest Cook,...

  • Ian Boots responds to college newspaper article

    Dec 11, 2008

I was interviewed by student reporter James Pallitto, from the student-run Ohio State University newspaper, The Lantern. When the article was released on November 25, 2008, I was disappointed with the article and the way it portrayed our community. It saddened me to see our community portrayed that way, as the picture Pallitto created in the article was not anything we discussed in the interview. My understanding was the article was supposed to be about me and my experiences during my first year at Ohio State and how I stayed focused on my...
