  • Canada Customs seizes $85,000 undeclared by Akwesasne resident

    Canadian authorities announced this week that border agents at Cornwall Island’s Canada Customs seized a large amount of undeclared cash from a local resident. The 43-year-old Akwesasne, Quebec man attempted to cross the Canada Customs border and did not declare that he has was carrying more than $10,000 in cash. The border agent flagged the driver for a secondary inspection, requiring him to pull over and go inside. Canada Border Services Agency agents used a dog to search the man’s vehicle.     Police in western New York raided Cayuga-owned convenience stores last week, seizing 17,600 cartons of cigarettes they say failed to have required excise tax paid on them. While authorities have yet to invade on-reservation stores for failure to pay taxes, they seized the Cayuga goods last week claiming that the stores are not on reservation land.     There is still only one ambulance and duty crew on at any given time and we service the whole of Akwesasne. Patients are taken to Cornwall, Malone and Massena hospitals. Our friends at Seaway Valley Ambulance are still not operating at night or on weekends. In those off hours we cannot count on them to come to Akwesasne as a backup ambulance service.
