More than five months after the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne held it’s normal general election, one district remains without any district chiefs. For the second time since June, the results of the Kawehno:ke district election have been declared invalid as a result of appeals filed. Responding to appeals filed after the regular June 27, 2009 election, the Akwesasne Mohawk Court called for a by-election and stated that the June nominations were to stand and no new nominations allowed. Following the outcome of the November 7, 2009 by-election, i...
By Shannon Burns Twenty Native women - and surprisingly three Native men - walked the runway at Jacobs Tobacco Company Friday evening during the 2009 Nations Best ™ Next Top Model show. It’s the third year JTC has held the competition in which Native women from any territory compete for a one-year modeling contract. The show was created in 2007 to promote the JTC brand of tobacco “Nations Best ™” but it has grown into a large event with widespread impact. Of the twenty girls who competed...

Like a cat, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s pursuit of a casino in the Catskill Mountains has nine lives. After more than a decade of ups and downs, hopefulness and hopelessness, the project could be back on despite the outcome of a tribal referendum on November 28, 2009 in which tribal members voted that Council should completely halt any further pursuit of a Catskills casino. Days later, the tribe’s election board issued a rare declaration on the results of the referendum: Null and void. The election board received an appeal from a com...

It has been five years since you left my side, Can’t even begin to count the number of tears I cried. There isn’t day go by, where I don’t think of you, I just smile or cry. That’s all I can do. The first year was hard, it hurt like hell. But each year was better as I started to get well. Sometimes I get angry at my Creators plan, Because things happen that I don’t understand. The one thing that I’m grateful for, is you were a part of my life, You blessed me with children and made me your wif...

I’d like to address an article that appeared in the Massena Daily Courier Observer dated Nov. 7, 2009 reporting the Washington trip of tribal chief James Ransom. I am glad that we are finally getting attention at higher level of government both in Washington and Albany, I think it is long overdue, but my concern lies in the “trusteeship” of Mr. Ransom. Many people look at him in “awe” and consider him to be the best invention since “sliced bread”. I am not so easily fooled and consider his record to be somewhat hypocritical. He characterized th...

In a society where profit is the fuel that keeps the system running, keeping information that would cure disease away from people who are diseased is unfortunately already built into the system. Are we really to expect people who profit from the sick to cure the sick? Do we really believe that a system, which generates profit in direct relation to illness, is going to place itself on the unemployment line by handing out diets and letting people know that what they do in their kitchens determines if they get sick or not? Are we to expect pharmac...
Sweetener: Organic granulated sugar What it is: Unbleached, less processed granulated sugar cane. Health impact: Essentially the same calories and GI as white sugar, but retains some of the mineral-rich molasses. Eco-bonus: Some brands, such as Florida Crystals, are certified carbon neutral. What it is: There are more than 4,000 species of the nutrient-rich algae Rhodophyta, which gets its red color from the pigment phycoerythrin. It’s an important component of food (like nori) and cooking in Japan, where it has been cultivated for over 300 years. Benefits: Because red algae photosynthesizes and lives in very deep waters, it develops high levels of protein and vitamins, including vitamins B6 and B12, iron, and potassium. Sulfated polysaccharides, isolated from many red algae, may have antiviral and immune-boosting activities t...
