At approximately 8 pm on Friday evening Nov 19, 2010, employees of the Hogansburg (Akwesasne) post office notified emergency services officials after discovering a package that was leaking a liquid. The liquid was later identified as an herbal mixture containing medicinal chloroform. As a result, an area of St. Regis Road, in proximity to the post office was shut down and traffic was re-routed to McGee Rd. Although the leakage appears to have been small, and believed to be in the range of four ounces or less, the postmaster, a postal inspector...
A body pulled from the river Tuesday afternoon may be that of a young man missing from Akwesasne for over a month. The body was found stuck at a private dock at the mouth of the St. Regis River and Snye Channel. At press time rescue workers and police remained at the scene awaiting the coroner’s arrival. Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service Chief of Police Jerry Swamp confirmed that a body had been found but could not release the identity until family members were notified Tuesday. Twenty-two year-old Wanienteh Lyons went missing immediately f...
The St. Regis Mohawk School is proud to announce to the community that the number of children in band has more than tripled in three years and is currently the biggest it’s been in decades, if not ever. The boost could be attributed to the fact that band practice has been changed to take place during regular school hours, during the last hour of the day. Or, it could be because there’s a new young music teacher trying his hardest to get students excited about music. “I try to make the band...
The Haudenosaunee Six Nations Sing was a huge success over the weekend, taking place in Akwesasne at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse. The event brought singing societies together from all over the Haudenosaunee territory to showcase their newly created 5 verses of the Women’s Song. Groups like the Kahnawake Men’s & Women’s Society, Allegheny Society and two from Six Nations were among those to attend. Excitement was in the air as friends and family reunited for this special occasion. Well over 800 Haudenosaunee people attended Akwesasne’s Fall Si...

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month and I am one of thousands of volunteers working to raise awareness of this terrible condition. Epilepsy is common, but many people know little about it or what to do when someone is having a seizure. As someone affected by epilepsy, I strongly encourage everyon...

Niawen Peter Garrow’ Thank you to the AKWESASNE LACROSSE HALL OF FAME This is a great honor and I would to thank the selection committee for even just considering me worthy enough for this tribute and then to bestow it on me. A tribute I never imagined and I am humbled to be in the same company of my Grandfather – the original Peter L. Garrow (Sa-gi nah-gua). I remember seeing pictures of him as a young man with his sparse goalie equipment and narrow goalie stick with his amazingly long, sinuous legs and with sharp eyes that bore into you. He...
On November 11 of this year a large delegation of Haudenosaunee Confederacy (Iroquois) gathered at the New York town of Canandaigua to commemorate the one and only legitimate treaty entered into between their ancestors and the United States in 1794. That treaty committed the US to respect the sovereign status of the Confederacy and to respect its territories while making a formal pledge to live in mutual peace, undisturbed by intrusions from each signatory. Although the treaty has been violated many times by the US and its subsidiaries (such...

On Wednesday, November 10th, the entire school participated in Bring Your Parent to School day. Many parents and family members came to school with the children and eagerly participated in the same classroom assignments as the students. In some cases, it was quite amusing to see the children telling their parents how to do the assignments correctly. By the end of the day everyone had a good day and most were ready to get back to their roles as students and parents....

The Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force (HETF) was invited to attend a Great Lakes Gathering at Blue Mountain Lake and it was quite an eye opening experience. Did you know that the Great lakes could be bought and sold to the highest bidder. As a Haudenosaunee person, you would think this could never happen. With the budget crisis and governments at all levels strapped for cash to balance their budgets, some are looking towards the fresh water of the Great Lakes to bail them out. Different organizations on both sides of the Great lakes that...
In the last article I explored the common trend where people appear to make it their full time job to hurt their health and then when they finally achieve their goal, they run to a “health” system that often further abuses the body. It’s almost like people graduate from abusing themselves personally, in the minor leagues, to the major leagues where teams of “health professionals” jump in with surgeries, radiation or toxic medications just to take the abuse to the highest level possible. It all depends on how you look at it and my readers a...
Addiction: An Information Guide People use alcohol and other drugs for many reasons. Some use these substances to help them to relax, to feel more lively, to feel less inhibited or to feel pleasure. Some find the effects of substances make it seem easier to cope with problems. Some use substances for religious reasons or to fit in with the crowd. Others may be curious about the effects of a specific drug. No one plans to become addicted. People may think that they can handle their substance use and that they only use when they want to. But when...
Over the last few months I’ve been treated exceptionally well at local businesses. I’d like to say thanks to them as an anonymous customer. During the week I have Little Brother on my hip while we run errands. Even though I only have the one boy during the day I had sworn off restaurants for a few months just for the sake of saving a sliver of sanity for my weekends. Little Brother could not be expected to sit still for the fifteen minutes it takes to place your order. Combined with the wait for the food we could never make it. He’ll throw...
