(November 13, 2015) The Akwesasne Mohawk Police are investigating an incident after a taxi driver was robbed, assaulted and kidnapped in the early morning hours of November 9, 2015. Around 1:50 A.M. on November 9, 2015 a taxi cab driver picked up two males at La Maison Tavern in Cornwall, Ontario. There were 17 Veterans who attended along with students who were family members. They were served a delicious breakfast of eggs, sausages, ham, hash browns, English muffins, coffee, juice, and yogurt. Each class shared with the Veterans poems, stories and artwork. AKWESASNE – After a short illness, Mary Kay Square, 64, of 60 Angus Thomas Memorial Road, St. Regis, passed away Thursday evening, November 12, 2015 at her home. Mary Kay was born October 20, 1951 in Cornwall, the daughter of the late Thomas and Cecelia Thompson Square. She attended St. Lawrence College and graduated from General Vanier. Akwesasne – Mr. Joseph P. Jacobs, known to many as "Joe Buick", 79, of 1460 State Route 37, peacefully passed away Monday evening, November 16, 2015 at his home with his family by his side. Joe was born on April 23, 1936 in Akwesasne, the son of late Paul and Mary Casey Jacobs. He attended schools in Akwesasne, then Bombay High School. On September 22, 1962, he married Alice A. The 2015 Christmas Enchantment took place this past weekend starting with our Elders Day on Thursday, November 12th. They were treated to corn soup, yeast rolls and dessert. Thanks to Indian Time for sponsoring the meal. Afterwards, they strolled through the beautiful display of trees; we had close to 200 Elders for lunch. Christmas Enchantment opened to the public from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Then on Friday students from area schools were treated to a viewing. We saw approximately 500 students. On Thursday, November 12, 2015 the St. Regis Mohawk School held its annual Academic Carnival. The gym was done up carnival style with music, Belly Buttons the Clown painting faces and about 10 booths run by teachers featuring educational games. Students got a passport booklet upon entering the carnival and with each station stop came a sticker. Paul Hetzler Chinese lanterns, bright and cheery, can lend a festive air to an evening out on the patio. As far as I know they are harmless.
