Tragedy has struck again on the St. Lawrence River over the weekend as a boating accident resulted in one fatality. The accident occurred on the waterway in front of Loran’s Marina in the main shipping channel. Eyewitness reports have indicated that two men who were operating a small watercraft hit large waves created by a passing yacht. Steven P. Herne, age 76, of Atlanta, Georgia, and formerly of Akwesasne, passed away on Monday August 22, 2011 after a lengthy illness. Steven was born May 21, 1935, the son of Norbert Paul Herne and Frances Cook. Steven spent 30 years as a Foreman working for the Owens Illinois Glass Company in Georgia. Letter to the Editor: On Monday August 15th, Larry Thompson had a hearing in Massena Town Court to determine if there is enough evidence to send he and his two felony charges and misdemeanors allegations to a Grand Jury for possible indictment to a higher court. The lower court determined that such evidence does exist, Judge Sharlow also determined that the $100,000 cash bail that was set was excessive and he lowered the bail to $5,000. Good move. It is a mere two days away from the 2011 Annual Dinner and Quilt Auction, which will take place this weekend at the Akwesasne Freedom School in Raquette Point on Saturday and Sunday. This event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the school, which operates entirely from private donations and fundraisers.
