Akwesasne Community Members, Abuse of our frail and vulnerable Elders takes place every day by the people they trust most, their caregivers. The signs of abuse are evident but no one takes action, either out of fear of retaliation or because of their own personal agenda. Your long term care facility used to enjoy a good reputation of providing excellent care for the Residents but all that has changed. Now, current Residents can’t wait for their ‘first choice’ of a long term care home to have an open bed offer so they can move out of Tsiio...

The Christmas season is quickly approaching and we at the Akwesasne Holiday Helpers are in preparation of assisting our community members by bringing joy and hope to families this season. This year the Akwesasne Holiday Helpers made some changes to our process. Some of these changes are that every registered household will receive one turkey and one gift card. Another change will be that only donated toys will be distributed to those most in need, not every household will receive a gift this year. We hope that even with these changes we can...

In an unprecedented move, Alaska voters have ousted a judge who signed off on a controversial plea deal that let a man serve only one year of home confinement for choking and masturbating on an Alaska Native woman. Voters on Tuesday opted to not retain Superior Court Judge Michael Corey, who oversaw the assault sentencing of 34-year-old Justin Schneider. Schneider in September pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a year in prison. With credit for time served in home confinement, he walked out of...
