The U.S District Attorney Office announced this week that a Derek Cook, 31 of Akwesasne, Quebec has pled guilty to charges in connection with the 2008 robbery and murder of Daniel Simonds of Stockholm, NY. Cook pled guilty to conspiracy to engage in a Hobbs Act robbery and aiding and abetting the possession of a firearm used in relation to a crime of violence, which caused the death of another person. The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service released information this week to the community pertaining to recent drug seizures and search warrants executed within the community. C.A.T.S. (Cats Are Treated Sensibly) is a FREE spay and neuter program initiated by Jean Laffin of Akwesasne and Lois Thomas of Fort Covington in 2008. This program assists in reducing an overpopulation of cats in Akwesasne and Fort Covington and is available also to cats’ caretakers with employment in the two communities. Peter George-Ranikonhionni was born at Akwesasne on Oct. 2/1913. Ranikonhionni was an ironworker and an artist. His friend Jim Sickles, an Oneida of the Thames, said he worked with Ranikonhionni in Detroit. At breaks and during lunch Ranikonhionni would forsake his food in order to draw sketches of the workers. He moved from Detroit to Chicago where he was a regular visitor at the Indian Center there.
