    Shannon Burns|Nov 5, 2009

The obelisk was planted in the early 1900s to mark the U.S. and Canada border at the entrance to the village. Many Mohawks have resented its presence, as they believe Akwesasne has no Canadian or American border running through it. Larry Thompson operated a backhoe Friday afternoon as a small crowd looked on. It was a struggle to remove the large cement...

  • Letter to the editor

    Nov 5, 2009

Letter to the editor; Please print this for me for all of Akwesasne to hear. Friday October 30/09 was such a great day. I was sitting in my living room watching T.V. waiting for the Olympic Flame to land in Winnipeg. I don’t know what there is about the Olympics but I’ve been interested as long as I can remember. When the door opened and Aronhiaies Herne and his partner carrying the flame in the lantern exited, I could not help myself. I started to choke up and started crying. What an honor it is for this young man of Akwesasne to be a part of...

  • Letter to the editor

    Nov 5, 2009

Letter to the editor, Should Canada Customs be allowed on Cornwall Island, Mohawk Territory? I say No! The Canadian customs intends to expand the facility, like the U.S. Customs. This will take more Indian land. Remember the Jay Treaty? When the Mohawk people were told the border didn’t apply to Mohawks, just white people. Don’t kid yourself, Canada and the U.S. believe they own the Mohawk reservation. Why else would the border end up splitting the reservation in half. All Mohawk people must resist any infringement on our land. It’s not about...

  • The Canandaigua Fire Must Be Preserved

    Doug George Kanentiio|Nov 5, 2009

The annual commemoration of the 1794 Canandaigua Treaty is one of the most important gatherings of the Haudenosaunee. It reminds us of a time when our concerns were paramount in the US which, in response to our complaints about the massive theft of our lands, sent Timothy Pickering to negotiate a treaty of peace and friendship. The Americans were not acting out of a genuine concern for the Iroquois but in their own self interests. The US was involved in a military campaign against the native nations in the midwest and wanted the Confederacy to...

    Shannon Burns|Nov 5, 2009

Two Akwesasne sisters are Jay-Z fans for life after luck had them right on stage with the rapper during his performance in Ottawa Sunday night. Reannon Day and Morgan McDonald had 5th row floor seats and were excited about the show itself but even more excited when they came up with a plan that they hoped would get them closer to Jay-z. • Is your food the cause of your health concern?

    Nov 5, 2009

Recently I had the pleasure of treating a beautiful 14 month old girl. Her mother brought her to my clinic after consulting with other doctors to address a severe case of eczema (a skin condition). A blood allergy test was conducted at the request of her mother to determine if she had any food allergies, as her symptoms had started with the introduction of foods other than breast milk. Her mother also sought a second opinion from a pediatric allergist in Ottawa. Cutting a detailed story short, she was determined (through the tests at my clinic...

  • Origin of the Clans

    Nov 5, 2009

Continued from last week One day the elders became alarmed and called a meeting of all the people of the villages.
