An elderly Akwesasne man died early Halloween morning after being struck by a vehicle as he was walking on Route 37. St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police responded to the scene at approximately 2:35 a.m. on Oct. 31. Luke Arquette, 76, had been struck near the American Legion and 37 West Restaurant in Akwesasne. Arquette was transported to Massena Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries he sustained in the accident. Red Ribbon Week was celebrated across the country last week by schools and communities promoting drug-free awareness. In Akwesasne, students at area schools take part in the weeklong festivities but this year the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Alcohol and Chemical Dependency Prevention Program organized a larger event for the whole family. On Saturday afternoon a large group of volunteers met at the Tsi Tetewatatkens Senior’s Center for a sewing bee with a special purpose. Thirty-five hats were made for cancer patients who are currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments and could use some extra help up top. On Friday, Nov. 5, Darryl Tonemah will be visiting Salmon River Central School to perform and speak to grade 5-12 students in the school’s auditorium.
