C.A.T.S. (Cats Are Treated Sensibly) is a FREE spay and neuter program initiated by Jean Laffin of Akwesasne and Lois Lancette of Fort Covington back in 2008. This program assists in reducing an overpopulation of cats in Akwesasne and Fort Covington and is available also to cats’ caretakers with employment in the two communities. In February of this year Lois asked the SRMT Animal Control Officer, Jennifer Herne, if she would be interested in continuing the program, and I have been volunteering...
The annual Halloween party was held last Friday Oct. 28 at the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Early Childhood Development Program. Running Deer Construction donated the use of their float and Junior David donated another wagon to provide all of the children with a hay ride to the Tribal facilities. The children dressed up in a range of costumes like Woody from Toy Story, unicorns, Ironman, Captain America and witches galore. A Tribal Police escort ensured the safety of the traveling group as they m...

We now turn our thoughts to the Trees. The Earth has many families of Trees who have their own instructions and uses. Some provide us with shelter and shade, others with fruit, beauty, and other useful things. Many peoples of the world use a Tree as a symbol of peace and strength. With one mind, we greet and thank the Tree life. We are continually reminded that our Creator has made all things with a purpose, a duty and a responsibility; few things carry their responsibility with as much grace and beauty as the Trees. The Trees have many...

My boys have had their days. One bugs the other regularly. They get along, share, then they have their disagreements. A few minutes later they make up and are friends again and of course the cycle repeats itself…and repeats itself a few more times throughout the day. I notice more on the weekends because they haven’t had their “break” from one another. During the week Little Brother goes to his preschool program, which he loves and does not allow anyone to call it day care so we all say school. He wants to be just like his brother. Once Bi...
Halloween is over, the extra candy has been put to good use – bagged or boxed and given to such places as Value Village, Salvation Army, put on desserts such as cupcakes, cakes, brownies or to organizations that send “goodies” to the US Service men and women. With the first Nor’ Easter hitting the east coast states and parts of New York State, people think about hunkering down for the winter. This means that blankets are cleaned, the flannel pj’s and sheets/pillowcases are laundered and the pillows are evaluated to see if new ones need to be pu...

This has been a debate for a long time. I don’t do plastic. I usually opt for paper, but really paper is no better. I sometimes don’t take either one and just carry my stuff out of the store, but some people don’t like that. My son was actually told by one clerk that he had to take a plastic bag. She said, “No you have to take a bag!” He was like, “No, I don’t. I don’t want a bag.” I was so proud! It drives me crazy when someone goes into the store and buys one item, say a pack of gum, and they put it in a bag. So if no plastic and no paper, wh...
PJ was fishing again last week, which is not an unusual sight to see this time of year. The location he chose for the afternoon was behind the Communications Building in Kana:takon where he was trying to catch small mouth bass. Late afternoon he had a bite and ended up reeling in a small mouth bass weighing in at 7lb 4oz – which is 1lb short of the current NYS record. “I was so excited and was worried that it was going to snap the line as I was reeling it in,” said Burns of the battle to bring...
The Salmon River Girls Varsity Soccer team has moved onto the Championship game set for tonight. The Salmon River Girls Varsity Soccer team is the top seeded team in Section X Class B and will play against #2 seed Potsdam Sandstoners. Salmon River comes into the game with a league record of 7-1-0 and non-league...
The coaches for the Massena Modified Football team during the 2011/2012 season had been John Burns, Chad Simpson and Herb Currier. The grade 7 and 8 players were divided into three sections: teams A, B and C because there were so many players. A majority of their games were wins and their toughest opponent seemed to be St. Lawrence Central. The official ending to their season was marked with a banquet that was held with awards presentations (those award winners were unknown at press time). It...
The Massena Lady Raiders varsity volleyball team overcame the Chateaugay Bulldogs Tuesday night in the overall Section X Semi-Final Round. It was a nail biter as the Lady Raiders won the first two sets and then the Bulldogs came back and matched them for another two sets. Massena fended off Chateaugay taking the fifth set and advancing to the Championship game of Section X. This win came after the Massena Lady Raiders took the Class B title from Malone’s Franklin Academy last Friday night in a...
Akwesasne’s hockey enthusiasts have geared up for another season of watching pro hockey at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena and the rinks of other teams in the Federal Hockey League for the 2011-12 season. Fans will see new faces on the ice as well as behind the bench this year. It is exciting that there are a few new local skaters added to the roster and they are Adam Thompson who will be one of the goaltenders; Ian Mitchell (D) is another player who has suited up for the defending FHL team; Walla...
Sken:nen Teiokwahawi – ‘Carrying the peace with us’ is a grassroots movement that has been working to collect winter clothing to be transported to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota before the cold winter months hit. Neddie Thompson has played a major role in sparking this years’ drive to ship supplies to Pine Ridge. The effort began in September 2011 and the idea was to use the Native American Music Award to bring awareness to the public of different ways to help Pine Ridge. A local g...
