Ryan Hill, originally from Six Nations, now living in Akwesasne, recently won the Saratoga Springs Native American Festival Art Contest with his soapstone carving entitled “Passing on the Tradition.” Ryan could be seen working in front of the local business “Mohawk Printing” located on Route 37 not far from the Akwesasne Library. During the past summer months, you could often see Ryan transform a solid piece of soapstone into a masterful piece of artwork over a span of several weeks. The bea...

  • Stood His Ground

    An Anonymous Mother|Oct 25, 2012

When raising children you are responsible for so much. We teach them to share, encourage them to be brave and give them a shoulder to cry on. We listen to their fears and try to coax them to overcome them. As they grow and their world gets bigger so do the problems they’ll face. We teach them it is wrong to hit by example and mediate squabbles so that there is no payback, repeating, “Hands to yourself and do not use hurtful words towards each other.” I tell my boys it’s not our way as kaniekeha. The lessons that are hard are when they deal wi...

What should I do? ~ Signed, Shopaholic Dear Shopaholic: Ask yourself this question: Do you control your money or does it control you? There are a lot of reasons why people shop. Feeling down? How about some retail therapy, as they call it – shop ‘till ya drop. You might feel better for a while, but the party’s over when you get that credit card bill. And then all of a sudden your money is control...

  • Why Do Computer Workers Insist on Working from Home?

    Monica Peters|Oct 25, 2012

Dear Monica: I want to hire a computer professional to work at my office but most insist that they can do better work from their own home offices. What am I doing wrong, how can I entice reliable and qualified computer workers to want to work at my awesome office during normal 9 to 5 week days without breaking my bank? Dear Awesome Office: I am often asked this question by office workers that are not competing on the Internet, so they do not have a need to be knowledgeable about the opportunities that are only available online. I suggest you...

  • Boxelder bugs invading North Country

    Oct 25, 2012

The warm spring followed a hot dry summer are the perfect conditions for boxelder bugs and swarms have been reported in several North Country towns. Though almost anything in a swarm is annoying, the bug poses no real threat since they are not known to carry human diseases and won’t decimate any people-food crops. If you have them, what they eat is what might be drawing them to your yard. Their favorite is the sap of the box elder, but they’re happy with most elders and other members of the map...

Friday evening at the St. Regis Recreation Hall, teenagers were invited to come out and try their wills in the Zombie Fear Factor. Competitors had their choice of 10 different dishes, some marked puke, brain chunks, cat food, snot, toenail soup, zombie hearts or even zombie guts. The youth competed in a three round elimination with the last round being the Fear Factor Garbage Plate, and as I write this I am having a hard time imagining eating all that awful stuff. The garbage plate contained...
