On Friday October 11, AK Gas and Tobacco celebrated its 18th year serving Akwesasne. The parking lot was packed with vendors and the store had many specials. There was 10 cents off gasoline, the café had a free pancake breakfast in the morning and a great lunch special of hot dogs, chili and a drink, 25 kids received free pumpkins and several other great giveaways. The Kanatakon School had lots of visitors last week. On Wednesday morning, students got to spend some time outside to learn how to wash corn. Chester Thompson from Kanenhsto:hare went through the process step by step for the children. On Thursday, the children had a meal of corn soup and fried bread. On Friday October 11, HAVFD Station 1 was the spot for a benefit for Helen Angela Lazore. The benefit was to raise funds for medical expenses, and Station 1 was buzzing with Helen’s family. On Friday October 11th, Akwesasne Mohawk School received from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada their Big Heart Award for the Ontario North East region comprising of 414 schools.
