  • To The Editor:

    Oct 16, 2014

I recently attended an open meeting held by several Akwesasne Seniors working together on the topic of sharing revenue from the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort. In doing so, I learned a number of things about the financing and accountability of our Tribal Resort. It seems like many more people in general are talking about these topics. I have even had some local people come up to me and identify themselves as “concerned” about some things that they are aware of. For instance, there is an ongoing management campaign to profile casino workers who...

The Rooseveltown Road facility has been operating since 2002 and is busier than ever. Traditionally the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club's operating hours were from after school until 8:00 pm. Two years ago that changed to 6:00 pm, which meant more activities must be crammed into a shorter period of time. But the decrease in hours doesn't take away the fun and learning. The club...

Angus Adams has been involved in a career as an ironworker for about 51 years. In the beginning, at the age of 16, he left home to go look for work in the city after being in a job that paid $15.00 a day. This wage didn't suit the needs of a man so far away from home. On a rainy day, he began walking around in Brooklyn. He saw a sign at the Union Hall that read, "Looking for painters". Angus entered the building and was approached by a man who acted as if he knew him. He was mistaken for someone...

  • Teachers Trivia Night at Cedarview

On Thursday October 9, the Salmon River Central School Teachers Association held a Trivia contest with lots of laughs. The majority of the questions dealt with local school board practices, government, history of education, and topics suited for a school get-together. But late in the program the quizzes were about entertainment and those were tougher to answer. The Master of Ceremonies was Loren...

  • Ten of the Greatest Lies in American-Indigenous History

    Oct 16, 2014

Continued from last week by Doug George-Kanentiio 8. Europeans, and Americans, used their superior military weaponry and tactics to defeat Native nations. To unravel this lie take three examples. On July 3,1778 a force of 460 Iroquois and 110 British rangers were engaged in a fight...
