  • Man wanted in kidnapping of girlfriend arrested

    A 27-year-old Brushton man who was the subject of a massive manhunt across the North Country last week has been arrested. On Tuesday, Oct. 5, Robert J. McCann allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, held her at gunpoint, assaulted her and drove her to a number of locations before she was able to talk him into releasing her a day later. She then went to police and the manhunt began. Police warned the public that McCann was armed and dangerous.     On Friday, Oct. 8, just before 5 a.m., the Akwesasne Mohawk Police received a call in regards to an overdue boater. A search commenced on the northwest side of Cornwall Island involving the Akwesasne Mohawk Police, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Ontario Provincial Police.     An enormous fire broke out Sunday evening in the city of Cornwall’s east end at the site of the historic brick Cotton Mills building. Firefighters worked through the night into the next day extinguishing the flames, which could be seen from the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino several miles away.     Submitted by the SRMT The St. Regis Mohawk Court applied for a Department of Justice (DOJ) Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS) grant for the fiscal year of 2010.
