In what was supposed to be a “Rally” to bring awareness to the number of land disputes in Akwesasne turned into a planning session. Key people at the session were disappointed, but not discouraged by the lack of support shown on Monday, October 8, 2013 at the crossing on Kawhenoke. According to sources there are at least over 200 unresolved land disputes in the northern portion of Akwesasne. In a complicated and convoluted system created by Indian Affairs to handle land transfers, land grants, and land willed, the system becomes even more com...
The rain didn’t keep people from the fishing on Sunday at the 19th Annual Noah Thompson Memorial Fishing Derby. Seventy-six adults and 18 kids fished for bass, perch and cash over the weekend at the Thompson residence in Kanatakon. And who could miss that meal? Walleye was on the menu, and so many dishes that I can’t even list them all. The entire Thompson family helps out at the event that takes months to plan. Even the little ones helped putting out chairs, handing out sodas and cleaning the f...

Imagine if I was given one moment, just a single slice of my past. I could hold it close forever, and that moment would always last. I’d put the moment in a safe, within my hearts abode. I could open it when I wanted, and only I would know the code. I could choose a time of laughing, a time of happiness and fun. I could choose a time that tried me, through everything I’ve done. I sat and thought about what moment, would always make me smile. One that would always push me, to walk that extra mile...

There are many lessons you teach your children, some more frequently the others. Some arise all on their own without you having to facilitate an example. Others come from the world. We learn many lessons as moms too. When to pick your battles. When the fight is worth it and will pay off in the long run. I am still learning to be patient. I was never one of those, “let’s wait and see” type of people. I’m more of the “holy we’re late” types. When I had kids I quickly realized everything was on their time not mine. I had to learn to take a deep br...
