At 6pm on Monday the Salmon River board room was packed for the SRC Board of Education meeting with people wanting to speak and hear the result of a vote that, with a yes, would amend the Feb. 20, 2008 resolution to strike the part of the resolution that bars William Plante from all future coaching positions in the district. Many might wonder, why is this coming up now? The SRC Board of Education meeting agenda read that in an earlier meeting “Trustee Peter Ghostlaw requested, and Trustee Roger Lapage Supported, to add the resolution to the n...

The class was held over 3 weeks and there were two classes a week. In the class the students completed at least 1 bag, but most got a second one in. Not only was the class teaching the skills to make medicine bags, but there was a cultural and language component as w...

7, Seskehko:wa/September 2013 I want to take this time to respond to a Letter to the Editor that appeared in the September 19, 2013 edition of Indian Time. The letter referenced a finance report that was provided at a recent Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s General Meeting. The following information is being provided to help provide some clarification. I want to begin by stating that the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is NOT on the verge of bankruptcy NOR at risk of being placed under third-party financial management. Far from those unlikely s...
LETTER TO THE EDITOR September 24, 2013 Land Disputes Rally On October 7, 2013 at 9 am a rally is being planned on Kawenoke concerning the 200 plus land disputes on the territory. We do not need to have these disputes handed down to future generations. We need to resolve them so that we may peacefully co-exist with our neighbours and sometimes with our families. At a recent general meeting the membership was told that it was up to Canada to resolve these issues. It is therefore up to us to rally everyone who has a land dispute to come and join...

By Doug George-Kanentiio Akwesasne Mohawk In the winter of 1977, I was a student from Akwesasne attending the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. I was planning to transfer back to the northeast and sought a school which I thought could serve as the basis for a radically new approach to aboriginal cultural preservation and the dissemination of indigenous knowledge, one which would become, in effect, a national Native university. After considering many schools from Cornell to Columbia, Colgate to Clarkson I believed (and still do) that...
