New York State’s plan to impose taxation on tobacco sold on reservations has been delayed once again. On Sept. 16, U.S. District Judge Lawrence Kahn granted the request for a restraining order and ordered the state to refrain from enforcing the taxation law until Oct. 1. In light of recent court filin...
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne recently learned that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and Bruce Power, a Canadian nuclear generation company, are in discussions to have 16 radioactive steam generators sent to Sweden via the St. Lawrence River. The controversial materials would begin their transit at Owen Sound, through the Great Lakes and up the St. Lawrence River where they would pass through Akwesasne waters before continuing east toward Europe. However MCA said they have not been consulted and will not give permission for harmful...

Only the belt’s purple and white beads know it’s original purpose, but Akwesasne people are embracing it as a symbol of the communi...

Submitted by MCA It has been brought to the attention of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne that some businesses are failing to honor the intergovernmental agreement that calls for the continuation of the point-of-sale tax exemption for First Nations in Ontario. The MCA is addressing this issue with the Government of Ontario, with information provided by Akwesasne consumers on vendors that are not removing the 8 percent provincial portion of the 13 percent Harmonized Sales Tax. “We were pleased that the Government of Ontario and the Government o...
PARTICIPANTS: 374 (last year 265) MONEY RAISED: $22,040 (last year $15,535) It is with great pride that Josee Sauve announces yet another astonishingly successful Cornwall Terry Fox Run. For the 5th year in a row, the Run has increased in both participation and in dollars raised! We had several teams today running together in memory of someone they lost to cancer. Teams that come out like this are doing such a wonderful thing for cancer research. Even though there were a lot of tearful memories, those teams raising that money are the reason...

The first class held was a canning workshop in which fresh spaghetti sauce was jarred up for storage. The process gives families the opportunity to eat unprocessed food all winter long. The second class was a...

When species populations decline, we tend to think it is due to long term environmental effects or subtle evolutionary changes. The decline of the Northern Map Turtle is known to be directly impacted by human activities. A highly aquatic species, Map Turtles like to spend their time in bays and shoreline zones of large lakes and rivers. This makes them especially vulnerable to boat strikes and propeller injuries. In the Thousand Islands section of the St. Lawrence River, boat strikes occur...

A diet heavy in sodium can cause puffy eyes, headaches, and a craving for calorie-laden drinks in the short run. Over time, it not only sends blood pressure soaring, but may also boost chances of developing stomach problems, osteoporosis, and kidney stones. Yet despite decades of government warnings and reams of fresh research about the myriad health hazards of excess sodium, we now eat up to 50 percent more than we did 30 years ago , feasting on a steady diet of packaged foods and restaurant fare that—unbeknownst to many—delivers a who...
