Mary Kawennotakie Herne and her two-year-old son Ross Rohstenseriio Herne live in Rochester while she works as a surgical nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital. Her sister Marcy also has a career as a nurse and lives in Houston, Texas. They have two brothers, Sean and Kyle who work locally. These four have a set of parents who really encouraged education and the life goals of the children. On Friday September 12, the St. Regis Mohawk School held an evacuation drill for the entire school. Students, teachers and staff, in conjunction with Tribal Police and the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department, practiced how and where to go in case of an emergency that required a full-scale evacuation. On Saturday, September 13, Iakhihsohtha held a Volunteer Appreciation Day. It is the first event of its kind, and went from 8am to 8pm starting with a big breakfast and the Drew's Crew Cloggers. Activities Coordinator Jamie Ross said, "It's a long day, but wonderful for the residents. Our goal is to show our appreciation to our volunteers. They're here in rain, cold, snow, they are here. The Salmon River Shamrocks boys varsity soccer team started off the season on the right foot with two league wins under its belt after a home opener win over the Gouverneur Wildcats, 5-1 last Thursday. The Shamrocks raced out to a 3-0 lead at halftime with Antoine Domino opening up the scoring when he connected off a pass from Dylan Cook 4:22 minutes into the game. Massena volleyball takes two straight The Massena Lady Raiders volleyball contingent took two straight victories against Canton and Edwards-Knox. Krysha Angus and Tianna Back anchored the victory against E-K. Angus fashioned 10 points and two kills. Back notched five points and a pair of kills. Adrian (Joe) Joseph Phillips, age 76, of Chittenango passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Originally from Cornwall Island, Ontario, he was the son of the late David Phillips and Katharine (Jocko) Phillips. After Serving in the US Army, he then worked for the Syracuse Water Department, retiring as a supervisor after 37 years of service.
