    Since the opening of the new U.S. Customs & Border Protection Service port at Massena/Rooseveltown, travelers from both in and out of Akwesasne have complained of what they deem unnecessary security precautions that are creating inconvenience. The main issue for travelers is the placement of several speed bumps in a single lane which northbound traffic is funneled into when leaving the U.S. A new two-lane road for exiting traffic was constructed with the new building but has yet to be open to traffic.     Months of planning and preparation paid off this weekend for the Akwesasne Powwow Commiteee as thousands of people attended the 9th Annual Akwesasne Powwow. The event was held Saturday and Sunday at the A’nowara’kowa Arena on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island).     The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe will hold a special meeting next Wednesday, Sept. 23 to ask their membership what the future of the First Americans IGA store is. According to tribal council, the store is losing money and the Tribal General Fund is paying to keep it open. At the special meeting, tribal council will seek opinions from community members and discussions will take place regarding a few options the tribe has.
