This legend happened long ago on an island in the St. Lawrence River. The island is called by the Akwesasne Mohawks, Jo-ka-ta-ren-re, and lies opposite St. Regis Point on the St. Regis Reservation. The story happened many summers in the past. Long ago, a man and woman their daughter lived alone on this island. They had a garden where they raised corn, beans and squashes. One day, as the three were working in their garden, the sky became very dark. Glancing up at the dark clouds, the father said that they had better run quickly to their house...

By Leslie Logan, Seneca Nation. Reprinted with permission from Indian Country Today. I watched a 20-year anniversary documentary about the Sept. 11 attacks on the Twin Towers last weekend. The New York City firefighters were the central focus. The film revisited the heroism of firefighters who were lost that day and firefighters who contracted terminal forms of cancer from having put in time at Ground Zero. No disrespect to the many firefighters whose lives were lost on that fatal day — they walked into burning buildings in what they p...

LA CONNER, W.A. As Skagit Chinook salmon populations and the Southern Resident Killer Whales dependent upon them continue to dwindle, today the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community (“Swinomish” or “Tribe”) sent a 60-day notice of intent to sue the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (“Corps”) for failing to uphold the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Corps has granted construction permits to dike districts in the Skagit Delta under the Tidegate Fish Initiative Agreement (TFI) for five years without requiring that the agreed-upon hundreds of acres of est...
DILLINGHAM, AK – Bristol Bay Tribes and communities celebrated today’s announcement that the Environmental Protection Agency will resume work on permanent protections for the Bristol Bay watershed that could safeguard the region from mines like the Pebble project. In a court filing, the agency said it will reinstate the 2014 “proposed determination” under section 404(c) of the Clean Water Act, that if finalized, would have restricted mining in the region to protect the watershed. With today’s decision EPA is now resuming the process that is n...
by Paul Hetzler Even if you have a top-notch security system, you could still return from vacation to find that your prescription drugs, tobacco products, rice, dog food, or other items have vanished. And you’d be on your own to solve this crime because the police would tell you to bug off. While not as prevalent as they were a couple generations ago, there are perhaps a dozen insect species in our climate that dabble in home invasions to pilfer meals. Collectively they’re called pantry pests, although some of them have fetishes for lea...
by Melinda Myers The extreme heat and drought of 2021 across much of the country has turned many lawns brown. Damaged lawns may be thin, contain dead patches or are overrun with weeds. Fall is a good time to improve the health and appearance of a weather-worn lawn. Start the process by evaluating the damage. Then plan a course of action and be prepared to follow through as needed with proper care. Fall fertilization can help improve thin lawns and those with numerous small dead patches the size...
Dearest family, dearest community How I love you... How tired my heart is with this trespassing fear menacing media Intruding our dearest of families and our dearest of communities. How these imposed measures were only ‘guidance’ yet are held with an iron fist. Our regnant civil duty ravaged by these imposters of consciousness. Release our minds from these dogmas... Good minds, good medicine, good being, how I pray for your savior, guidance and protection thru these sacred insults. May our human dignity resist and make peace with ourselves and...
Toronto, ON. As large-scale construction on U of T’s Landmark Initiative continues around the Hart House Commons, a number of large tree-protection hoardings have inspired a public art project entitled Tree Protection Zone (TPZ). When completed at the end of summer 2021, the aptly named project will feature specially commissioned mural-sized works by eight artists and their collaborators considering the preservation of life, water, and kin and how each is inextricably linked to the protection of trees. This temporary public art project p...
Dr. Tsun Sheng Neil Ku doesn’t have much time for fly fishing these days. The epidemiologist, who works at Billings Clinic in Billings, Montana, is too busy acting as a point person on all things COVID-19 not only for his hospital, but also for Yellowstone County officials and medical providers in the broader region. On top of that, he’s taken to social media - and appeared at public meetings - to combat misinformation about masking, vaccinations and testing. As of Monday, the Billings Clinic had 70 inpatients with COVID-19, most of whom are...
