On Sept 13, a state appellate court ruled that New York State’s enforcement of a cigarette tax law could move forward despite being stalled as a result of a federal lawsuit filed by the Seneca and Cayuga nations. While that case is still in federal court, the state court has lifted its temporary stay, allowing the law to move forward. The Senecas and Cayugas will continue to be exempt from the law’s enforcement until Sept. 28. by Doug George-Kanentiio I have had the honour of knowing Mark Nikanawaa Narsisian since 1984 when he took a chance and hired me as an editor of Indian Time. My initial impression was one of amazement that a man could laugh as deeply and with as much genuine happiness as Mark. He carried a great, enveloping light around him, making the demanding, arduous and all consuming task of producing a newspaper much easier. Going to work for Mark was easy since he cared about his employees and welcomed...
In memory of a great friend and cousin of mine. Mark was a good man, dedicated to his family and this community. He was always there for his family and friends, visiting, cooking, organizing reunions and helping out at celebrations or wakes. He was always sharing stories of growing up and his life adventures. Every conversation would turn hilarious by his embellishing on the story with bragging, boasting and exaggeration. Forget about telling him a secret, he was ace at blackmail! And I saw how...
When we think back to when we first met somebody, sometimes we can’t recall when it’s over thirty years later. But remembering Mark is easy for me. I was a young college student doing research and I considered Akwesasne Notes as one of my reference sources. This is when the office was located in the Racquette Point area of Akwesasne in the late 1970’s. When I walked in and met with Mark, he generously gave me many copies of previous “Notes.” Being shy and a little unsure of myself, I tried to...
Letter to the Editor To all Akwesasronon: The Akwesasne Eagle Watch has been accused of being a vigilante group. A vigilante is someone who decides to take the law into their own hands rather than relying on legal authorities. AEW has held peace walks in areas known for their drug trade. During most of these walks, we were led by an officer of either the St Regis Mohawk Tribal Police or the Akwesasne Mohawk Police. We have held candlelight vigils to remember those we have lost due to drugs, alcohol and violence. During these activities we ask...

Memorial Rodney Square Sept. 17, 2008 Two years have passed and we all still miss you very much. Especially your Grandchildren, they burst out crying and say they miss you. The tears that fall are reminders of how you were there in time of need, how you kept your head up high throughout the hurt and pain. But if you were still here today you’d tell us never give up and never let go of what is important to you. But I miss you very much, you meant the world to me. Now I sometimes shed tears like falling rain and heartache and feel that awful p...
