    Ian Oakes|Sep 13, 2012

This year’s Akwesasne International Powwow was held at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena over the weekend. This year’s celebration included dancers and singers from all over Turtle Island. There were 212 registered dancers, 42 registered Tiny Tots who competed, and 5 drum groups. The real attention getter on Saturday was the wind, and then the rain. The dancing and singing was moved inside, and most of the venders closed up for the day. A few food stands managed to stay open in spite of the weather...

  • Alcoa Protest on Hold, Negotiations Underway

    Samantha McMillon Wilkinson|Sep 13, 2012

The protest that was in its second week is at this point on hold. That’s because a sit down between Fluor Corp. and union representatives about a PLA (Project Labor Agreement) is reportedly in the works. “My understanding is that they are now engaged in negotiations,” said Tribal Chief Ron LaFrance, who was present at the picket line for two days earlier last week. “I think that may be the reason that the ironworkers have not been outside the plant recently. We’re all hopeful that the issue can...

The powwow committee was honoured to host the 12th Annual Akwesasne International Powwow. Even with the forecast of rain for Saturday, the spectators were a testament of how people believe in, and support this cultural event. The call to move into the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena on Saturday, due to approaching rain, was made just in time to ensure that all moccasins were dry, to proceed with the dancing, drumming and singing. A few craft and food vendors managed to stay open during the rainy afternoon, and were appreciative to those who braved the wea...

  • Letter to the editor:

    Sep 13, 2012

LETTER TO THE EDITOR DISBELIEF! September 11, 2012 Today is the anniversary of another historic date, that being September 11th. It has been 11 years since 9/11 and I am sure that everyone remembers where they were on that date. I had just made it across the border into Cornwall and the port of entry was shut down. I began my journey on that fateful day. Watching the towers crumble on my portable TV, I went into a state of shock and disbelief. A disbelief in the situation on that day is similar to my disbelief in the current political climate...

At the booth they sold a pulled pork dinner, or sandwich, beverages, fruits, snacks, and desserts. The dinner included a sandwich, two choices of coleslaw, beans, corn, or potatoes. A big draw was the strawberry drink, which unlike some of the other strawberry drinks being sold, was actually made with real strawberries, not Kool-Aid. The booth was staf...

  • A Wave and a Wink

    An Anonymous Mother|Sep 13, 2012

The brothers have started school. Big brother was so ready to go back. After a few months of his Brother’s sabotage antics he was frazzled like one of those stressed out mothers we see in Walmart. A few days before school he had his outfit set out on his dresser. His first day back was no sweat. He barely allowed me to snap a photo before he took off. When the bus came he ran off and didn’t look back. Off to the third grade. Little brother also picked his own outfit. But he’s more of the last minute type like me and set out his clothes at be...

  • Champlain-A Record Belt

    Tehanetorens|Sep 13, 2012

Champlain was the first offender and De Nonville the last to do serious injury. Up until twenty-four years after Champlain had killed three Mohawk men at Lake Champlain, the Iroquois had not t...
