This year’s Akwesasne International Powwow was held at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena over the weekend. This year’s celebration included dancers and singers from all over Turtle Island. There were 212 registered dancers, 42 registered Tiny Tots who competed, and 5 drum groups. The real attention getter on Saturday was the wind, and then the rain. The powwow committee was honoured to host the 12th Annual Akwesasne International Powwow. Even with the forecast of rain for Saturday, the spectators were a testament of how people believe in, and support this cultural event. Over the weekend at the Akwesasne Powwow, the Akwesasne Freedom School had a booth set up to raise funds to offset operating costs of the school. At the booth they sold a pulled pork dinner, or sandwich, beverages, fruits, snacks, and desserts. The dinner included a sandwich, two choices of coleslaw, beans, corn, or potatoes. On Monday, The Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department accepted delivery of a brand new fire fighting apparatus. Eastway Emergency Vehicles delivered the vehicle and Greg Rivers accepted the check from Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.
