Living in Akwesasne presents a unique set of daily challenges when it relates to crossing the border. Often, we think we are the only people group of people who have to go through this daily; we cross the bridge, we stop and pull out one of at least five identification pieces (New York State ID or driver's license, Ontario ID or driver's license, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal ID, Canadian Status Card, or a Passport from either country.) Just think, every time we drive across the river to visit our...
After two days of competition at Massena Arena, Thompson's Lacrosse walked out of the rink with the 2014 Mann's Cup. The free event, which was for players age 35 and up, drew local teams and squads from as far away as the Onondaga Nation. Other squads included Mann's Masters, the Kahnawake Rapids and a team sponsored by Thompson's Lacrosse. Following the title game, Akwesasne's Owen Benedict and Thompson's Jason Pragle were named tournament most valuable players. They each received a custom-made...

Many ironworkers from Akwesasne and Kahnawake began and completed the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows for the 1964 World's Fair. The Unisphere is a massive structure of a globular steel framework representing the whole world with all the continents attached. In the span of its construction, the American Bridge Company ran into some unique problems in the field of welding and in facing the task of giving the highest polishing job initially. There was also a problem in addition because of the...
She:kon, I am writing to express my gratitude to everyone who supported my journey to be a part of the inaugural "Indigenous Fine Arts Market" in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Nia:wen to all of the wonderful individuals who donated to my gofundme.com campaign, CKON Radio, The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, The Saint...
"Look at the beauty that is here on the beautiful St. Lawrence River. Think about how proud you feel standing here with your children showing the world that we are survivors and will endure," stated Bill Constant, (Opaskaywak Cree Nation, Northern Manitoba) master of ceremony on the opening of the second day of the Akwesasne Powwow . "Look at all of the dancers all dressed in regalia celebrating that not all was taken from us and honoring all the warriors from all wars, who felt that our people...

By Doug George-Kanentiio One of the most striking things I noticed at the 2014 Akwesasne Powwow is the physical appearance of the thousands of Natives who were there as contestants, organizers, staff and as fans of this wonderful event. It is my observation as an individual who has visited places around the planet (China, Australia, Europe, Africa, Korea, Israel, India, Turkey and many other nations) that the aboriginal peoples of this hemisphere are the most intriguing and most attractive. We know from our Creation story that anyone who has...

To The Editor: I am writing this letter to bring attention to the actions of a local athletic coach and an amateur box lacrosse coach. The recent championship box lacrosse tournament held in Whitby, Ontario was the scene of a coaching sideline outburst display by my son’s Coach directed against me as a parent. While driving my son to the tournament, I was detained by regional law enforcement. That delay caused my son, a player on the team, to be late for warm-ups but not the start of the tournament. Upon observing my son sitting on the bench d...

Letter to the Editor Tax Exemption Matters #663323 She:kon, It has come to my attention that the Big Lots retail outlet in Massena is no longer accepting the tribal identification cards for proof of tax exempt status. It would seem as if the last remaining store in Massena has now given in to the New York State Department of Revenue concerning tax exemption for Indians. On the back of the tribal ID cards is a number that reads 663323. No that is not a tribal number. In fact, it is a number that connects all Iroquois people that dates to 1966....
About a year ago we brought you a story about Bridget Thompson writing four books. At that point she was raising money to get them published, they were just pages in binders. Now they are published! The four children's books, geared for ages 5-12 are titled, "You're Perfect Just the Way You Are," "Love Doesn't Hurt," "This is My Body" and "Drugs Aren't Fun." And she not only has books, Bridget has bags, t-shirts, teddy bears and hopes to have hats soon, with her logo, "Bridget's World" on them....
