The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is following the Davis-CBSA tribunal and awaiting the outcome along with the rest of Akwesasronon. MCA has also filed several complaints with the Canadian Human Rights Commission against CBSA for human rights violations. On Saturday, CKON celebrated a Loyal Listener Appreciation Day. It was held at HAVFD #1 and hundreds came out for the event. CKON Board of Directors President Jerry Cook said, “It’s nice to see the community come out and have fun.” CKON Board member William Phillips said it was the second time they did a celebration on such a scale, and explained that CKON made no money at the event, as it was free for vendors to sell their goods. “I hope everyone had fun,” he added. On Thursday, Truckstop #9, Three Feathers Internet Cafe, RezPhones and Pig Pen Chip Stand wrapped up the summer with some fantastic giveaways to show their appreciation to all of their customers at their Customer Appreciation Day. The CKON Loyal Listener’s Appreciation Day was a success according to several participants at the event. “It’s so nice to think about something other than the passing of our community members,” said one community member. The community of Akwesasne passed an Akwesasne Residency Law in 1997. The Akwesasne Residency Law governs non-members who wish to reside at Akwesasne. Under certain conditions, the community may extend the privilege of temporary residency to non-members as per the Akwesasne Residency Law. During the past week, students from all areas of Akwesasne had the opportunity to pick up a free school bag from Mohawk Vision and Swamp’s Performance. For Mohawk Vision, this is their fourth year holding Akwesasne “Stuff the Bus,” and they gave out over 400 school bags filled with school supplies. On Sunday, Andria Cooke held a Speaking Circle at Smoking Arrow, the first of what she hopes will be many. You may just think, as the name Smoking Arrow suggests, it is just another smoke shop. But go for a visit one day soon and you will see that it is much more. Smoking Arrow also sells premium dog foods and herbs.
