The AFS Annual Dinner brings in much of the school's annual budget as community members gather on the school grounds to relax, bid on a quilt, purchase from local vendors or just to chat with an old friend or family member whom they haven't...

One day, an old man came to an Iroquois village. He appeared very tired and hungry. As he walked through the village, he looked above the doors of each house for the clan symbol. He came upon a house in which a turtle shell hung. The old man pulled the door open and asked for food and a place to rest for the night. The young woman took one look at the old man and immediately sent him away. As he continued walking, he came to a house of the snipe clan. At this house, he was called a beggar and the woman closed the door on him. The old man tried...

Paul Hetzler I’m not one to shed a tear when authoritarian rulers die, but once they’re gone, picnics become a lot more dangerous. Toward the end of summer, just in time for Labor Day picnics and County Fairs, the original queen in every yellowjacket wasp colony dies. It’s not the stuff of Hamlet or some far-reaching conspiracy, it’s just that having a few thousand babies in the course of one season is enough to tire any Queen Mum to death. The colony anticipates this loss, however, and raises a few additional queens as the old one starts to fo...
By Doug George-Kanentiio. People ask why the residential-boarding school survivors, their respective families and supporters wear orange. This began in 2013 when Phyllis Jack-Webstad of the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem Nation recalled when she was stripped of her orange shirt when she was taken to a residential school; it has since become a symbol of defiance across the nation. I asked Mohawk faithkeeper (Roterihonton) Kevin Deer if this must remain so. He said we can turn the color into goodness if we see orange in a different way. Orange, he sai...
