The Wampum Belt information comes from Tehanetorens (Ray Fadden) who has left us many cultural and historical documents. Notes: While reading a wampum belt, special care was made to hold the belts correctly. Usually when the message or speech was half finished, the speaker would turn the belt over. A clan, one of whose members had been killed, could hand a wampum belt to a noted warrior. If the belt was accepted by the warrior, it meant that he would take over the responsibility of getting revenge for the clan and thus uphold their honor, the...

By Livia Gershon. An analysis of fossilized footprints at White Sands National Park in New Mexico offers what some scientists say is the most conclusive evidence yet that humans lived in North America long before the end of the last Ice Age. The research, published in the journal Science, dates the prints to between 21,000 and 23,000 years ago. “We’d been suspicious of the age for a while, and so now [that] we finally have that it’s really exciting,” study co-author David Bustos, chief of natural and cultural resources at White Sands, tells N...
By Paul Hetzler Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland was chock-a-block full of whimsical characters such as a hookah-smoking caterpillar and a bloodthirsty Queen of Hearts playing-card. Although animals and some objects in the story are able to speak, somehow the idea of a talking mushroom was too far-out even for Carroll’s rich imagination. The book depicts a colorful hallucinogenic Amanita muscaria mushroom on which Alice dines (without so much as a parental warning) to become large or small. But while the Cheshire cat is chatty, the mus...

Working with his...
